I have 2010 prius with 99K miles that lost power while driving and I saw few errors on the screen, [engine light, triangle of death, check hybrid system etc],engine will not turn on,

Error code I found using TechStream:
P0A0F engine : Engine failed to start
C1259 HV control system regenerative malfunction
    p3190 poor engine power

I took it to the dealer and below is what they found.
Check engine light is on for poor engine performance and mass air flow high circuit. Fuel trim is 30% , sample was take form the vehicle and tank is filled with E85 gas, did not fill E85, I go to Costco for my gas and the do not have E85 option. They want 1500 dollars to empty fuel tank, fuel induction service to clean ethanol out of the system , replace spark plugs,, engine filter and oil change.

What experts out here recommend as far as repair suggested by dealer, should I take it to auto shop and get it fixed with dealer ? I can replace spark plugs my self but dealer is pushing me to get everything done at dealership.

When you lost power, did your car keep driving on EV mode? and if so, did you keep driving till you ran the HV pack down?
Does the engine turn over but not start Or doesn't even turn over?
How many bars (Hybrid Battery level) do you see on the dash?

I don't know what to say about what the Dealer claims you did.

If the dealership is adamant it's filled with E85, and you know that's not the case, you need a second opinion. That said: is there a any chance someone else filled up the car?

I run sheets blue fuel and all of my Prius without any problem I have not tried e85 and probably won't there's no difference in price for me from the e85 to the blue fuel I've been running the blue fuel for 4 years not had a problem It would seem to me if the car was at your house you would just siphon the gas out of the car like kids stealing gas. Or if you're in a big hurry take the back seat bottom out open up the big hole and then you can fit a big hose to drain it quicker but I find that hard to imagine especially if this just recently happened it would take a more than a minute for the e85 to eat things up enough to stop fuel flow something eat up the injectors I don't know what the story is they're trying to sell but that just sounds shaky at best The car not starting is quite possible I'm not sure that it would necessarily be the fuel when this happens to these cars usually the gas is the least of your problem unless it's not pumping which I think in a generation 3 you're in good shape You can replace just the fuel pump literally just the gold fuel pump not the plastic none of the other nonsense so there's that The poor engine performance is going to come when engine knock and ignition timing and/or plugs and coils are bad all of that sort of thing you'll get the poor engine performance because the engine's running like crap or it's not running at all which I don't understand how you folks even make this happen if my engine stops running I'm going nowhere even with a fairly decent battery I'm not going to go a mile or whatever nowhere My engine stops I pull over call my old lady to bring the generation too and leave the three on the side of the road when she brings my two TIS is with it so I'll scan it and make sure I'm far enough off the road and off in the Gen2 we go. Pretty much nothing's going to stop the generation too That's why we keep a few of them at the spot.

Tombukt2, thx for all the information, once I here back from costco, I want to drain the fuel and replace the spark plug but I might have to look into how to clean fuel induction service or have dealer do that.

Bisco, I am not advance techstream user so I was not able to look into subcode. how would I know if invertor pump is working or not?

How can I test health of my batter using techstream, I have looked into few videos on youtube but I dont see that option, I might be using old version of techstream software, I will have to find out a version which work on w10.

If this car has this the little played under the rear seat bottom you can just undo the 6/8 screws whatever it is now you can fit a pretty good size siphon tube like a 3/4 right in that hole and stick it right in a gas can and have another one at the ready I don't know how full you are and now the gas is out of the car pretty quickly you're down to nothing on the bottom of the tank actually are pretty close now you can just add some regular regular gas that will dilute whatever's left of the supposed e85 there is no way in a day or even a couple of days that the e85 is eating anything up in your car and it certainly shouldn't stop running I bet you're going to find it something else or what have you but such as life I guess. I find it hard to believe that e85 or gasoline that was put in your tank has all of a sudden eaten your car alive or it's fuel rail or system seriously I mean you know some of the chemicals that used to get poured into gas tanks for cleaning purposes and what have you so like I say it's tough for me to believe lifting the injector rail off of a 2Z is not a huge thing to be doing I think you can even put voltage to injectors and watch them squirt on the bench if that was really a thing I've seen people do it. So they're trying to tell you that this e85 has ate up something from the fuel pump up to the fuel rail That's a pretty wild proposition actually but it's not something that I could really easily believe but oh well. And probably pretty hard to prove too which is probably the point.

I suspect there was no E85 ever put in. The E85 test (a surprise to me) includes a step of adding water (H2O) to help separate the aqueous EtOH with it. Water may have gotten into the tank and caused this separation (agitation from natural vibrations in driving), and sample taken of this high EtOH content layer, (which would be at the bottom due to H-bonding, not due to being heavier as MotorTrend claims).

I took the car with dealer, they drained old fuel, replaced spark plug and did fuel induction service, care ran okay for two day and now I get check hybrid system light again.

Did they test the drained fuel for ethanol, or provide you with a sample?

I was told the sample was taken to test.
