Is the "Your plug-in system has malfunctioned" error occurring on all trims of the Prius prime "SE" "XSE" "XSE Premium" or just the XSE. Just curious I have a 2023 Prime SE I have driven it close to 2,800 miles and I charged it quite a few times (only to usually 80% never 100% to increase battery longevity) and haven't gotten any "Your plug-in system has malfunctioned" errors yet.

Heads-up, toyota pushed out an updated TSB (T-SB-0054-23) yesterday (8/7/23) on this. Check-in with your service department if you're encountering this issue.

It involves replacing the Vehicle Charger Assembly and yes, its of course a warranty r&r.

keep in mind that prius is not a tesla, you can't charge it to 100% because toyota already adds a top and bottom buffer.
your just cheating yourself at 80%

If you haven't received the error then don't worry about it. If the error occurs, then take it in for service. Drive it however you like, charge it however you like, it's your ride. Enjoy that 2023!

I encountered this error last night. 2023 Prius Prime XSE w/ ~1300 miles and been fully charged ~20 or so times since I bought it almost a month ago.

I am concerned because they are telling me the car cannot be driven and they have given me a rental. They are saying that the part is backordered and it could be 1-2 weeks. I'm worried it might be 1-2 months due to the rarity of parts for this car and the limited availability in the US market.

This service department has 200 or so cars come through it every day, and they have never received a 2023 Prius at the dealership ever, nor have any of the techs ever seen one or worked on one. I don't like being a guinea pig.

A little bit concerning, to say the least.

At least you get a fix, I was told there is no fix currently, and to continue driving like nothing is wrong until I hear back from them (not holding my breath).

I wouldn't worry too much, dog the rental. It's available at a few of the suppliers I have used in the past for OEM parts. I imagine this particular part isn't something the local parts counter is just going to stock but more like dropped ship straight from toyota PDCs.

G9090-47061 is the revised part and is replacing G9090-47060.

Did you ask them to look up T-SB-0054-23 which was pushed out on 8/7/23?

Have you checked with them in the last week? I'm holding a printout of the official TSB and it has a date of August 7th 2023, so from what I gather it's fairly recently that Toyota has acknowledged the issue and released a fix.

The service advisor tried to explain it to me in plain english and basically told me they need to replace the charging unit cooling fan w/ sensor.

Thank you for the info. This gives me hope that it will be fixed sooner rather than later.

HAHA yeah... the dealerships don't even stock spare tires for this car, let alone an obscure part like that. I asked at the parts counter what happens if I get a flat tire and how long it would take to get fixed and they told me $260USD and likely 2 days to get it in.

If a dealership has this in stock in Colorado Springs, then why can't they send it express to the dealer where my car is?

How do spare parts like this get managed by Toyota? I would think that dealers cant just stick these parts on the shelf to collect dust, and rather they should be sent to cars needing the part for warranty work.

It's not that its "in stock" in Colorado Springs at that specific parts department. I can't say with 100% certainty but I'd bet it is a case of the part being drop shipped by one of the regional Toyota Parts Distribution Centers. Either that or its a case of the service department/online parts counter orders the part and it is sent to them.

Thanks! Will come in handy if I ever need it. My VIN is before the one listed so my guess is sooner or later it will happen.

It would be really interested to know when and under what conditions the error gets thrown for the first time on the cars experiencing it. I feel like I charged my car many times in direct sunlight hotter than the day it happened. So why this time?

If anyone gets this error please report back when and how you think it happened the first time.

Do you remember roughly what mileage was on the car, or what it was doing when you saw the error the first time? Was is after charging? What type of charging, same as you always use? Was it hot outside?

Am I able to get a second opinion on if the car is drivable needing this part replaced? I really dont trust this service department. 15 minutes before their closing time I got a message that all the doors were unlcoked. Almost 3 hours later I checked and all the doors were still unlocked, 2.5 hours after they were closed. I just locked them remotely.

It makes no sense to me that the car cannot be driven in HV mode, since the issue is isolated to the CHARGER. If I don't charge the car, it should be perfectly fine, no?

Could you do me a favor and ask your service department again, in light of the TSB, if they still think the car cannot be driven needing this replaced? I think my service department is screwing me around and I dont trust any service department that sees 200 cars/day and doesnt have a single car in their showroom.
