In my town there not messing around with single cars there hitting dealers and hitting them hard. Another 25 cats at another Toyota dealer 2 nights ago made the news.

They like new Tundra's. Very organized and have a place to lay them off. They will still try to steal a G2 cat though I bet. Thats too choice.

How do you know if your catalytic converter has been stolen? I live in Arizona in a residential neighborhood and my car is parked in my driveway all the time!

Hi Debra Doesn't matter where you park it they'll clip it in the parking lot of the grocery store. takes less than a minute.

You live in a carb state you may need the factory cat on your car. That's a big problem as the factory G2 cat is on back order and very very expensive. If you did not live in a carb state you could use a cheap cat and sell your factory cat on ebay I sold mine for $1500.

Here's what you should do. Ask around and find out if they inspect the cat during emissions check I mean do they look at the cat on your car and see if it has the factory numbers on it or do they just check its emissions at the tail pipe. If they don't physically check the cat you can do like I did remove your cat sell it on ebay and then buy a $100 cat and have that installed. Car will run perfect.

    After market cat $125
Cost to have your cat removed and new cheap cat installed $100
    Sell your factory cat $1500
    Up $1200 cha ching

I painted my cheapo cat bright orange. At the very least if they steal your cheap cat no big deal throw another aftermarket cat on it.

In California for instance they actually examine the cat for the factory part number stamped on it. Although some posters have said they
did not do that on there car.

Go on youtube and search: Prius Stolen.

Did you just put the grate guard or did you do both methods with welding extra bars on the exhaust pipe?
Also was your original catalytic ever stolen? How long did you have the guard on your 2008 Prius? What happened to your 2008 and why did you buy 2007?
Would you recommend the DIY grate guard?

Pretty sure this would constitute a booby trap under the laws of most states. It would also be hazardous for any small furry beasts (possibly of the cat persuasion) who may decide to crawl under the car.

Doubt the illegality as it’s an obvious hazard.

As for the cats, oh well.

Yet another cold hearted thief molesting an innocent Prius 2nd Gen with a view to stealing its catalytic converter, gets instant Karma served to him by the less than impressed Toyota Hybrid, when it decided to avenge its fellow prior robbed Prii, and fell on the sneaky parasitic bastard.

Flow my tears. Not. I would sincerely like to be privy to this Darwin Award nominees last moments, when the Prius decided to take its revenge without warning, and dump its over engineered humpbacked monocoque aerodynamic fuselage on this misadventure seeking idiot.

I hope there were last minute regrets. I’d like to think he pleaded with the Prius to get off him - but it would seem the car was in Terminator mode and refused to show any mercy. He’d have probably had a better chance with a reticulated python - who, being a living creature, might……just might have taken pity on him in a similar situation and duly released its coils.

Who am I kidding? The Python would have equally stared him down coldly, while stopping his blood circulation till he gave up the proverbial ghost.
Hopefully, the poor Prius won’t be charged with homicide / murder / manslaughter (I can’t tell the difference; despite my morbid tribute to the Darwin Nominee, I’m no Dexter - and wouldn’t be seen dead under any vehicle - pun intended).

Apologies if my irreverence to the dearly departed, catalytic converter stealing, Prius molesting parasite offends anyone on here. Indeed, ‘twas a lousy…..no, dumb way to die, but he boldly went forth to commit a heinous crime - and paid the price in what I consider to be as gruesome as it was satisfying to anyone who’d had their catalytic converter similarly stolen.

what gauge of expanded steel did you use? seems like metal has gone through the roof and almost doubled in price over past year. thanks, great invention and post. I am looking for a secondary level of protection to cover up my cat shield and the exposed pipes so they can't rip the entire structure out with a strap and vehicle assault.

I believe it's 1/8 thick expanded steel grate. If I were to do it again, I would use 1/4 thick expanded steel grate. It seems the thieves are getting more desperate maybe thicker is better in this set up.

What are the dimensions (width x length) of the expanded metal grating needed to span the CAT area?
