2021 AWD-e XLE: Would a 16" donut spare be compatible?

    Daughter had her first negative experience with her 2021 Prius AWD-e XLE yesterday evening (Sat, July 22): Right front tire sidewall shredded by road debris (OEM Dunlop Enasave 195/65R15 91s), less than a mile from home. Had to wait nearly two hours for insurance tow, and MN DOT stopped to offer free assistance within minutes.

    Sadly, she learned her Prius has no spare...

    Towed to dealership for replacement Monday morning with two (2) new identical tires, mounted aft (right rear moved forward, left retained for future need). With barely 17K on the odometer, it seems unnecessary to replace all four tire as would normally be advisable...

    As this vehicle has no spare, investigating options: Is it permissible/acceptable to temporarily use a Prius 16" run-flat/donut if necessary, when all other wheels are 15"?

    Same bolt pattern (5x100), same center bore (54.1), not sure of the offset?
    OEM wheels are 6.5Jx15 et40, with 38~42 mm offset.

    As the donut is a smaller tire, wouldn't the 16" actually improve handling (being slightly taller) as it would more closely match the standard 15" height?

    So is this a Toyota temp spare? Likely good. Here's the 3rd gen spare info from owner's manual (page 566):

    The OD of this combo is within 1/8" of stock 198/65R15's outside diameter, by design. That's always the case with temp spares, they have to closely match the stock OD.

    For some reason, while the stock 4th gen tire is the same, Toyota with a 17" temp spare. The OD of that combo is a bit more than 1/8" undersized, but still close (page 735):

    Yes, the wheel size doesn't really matter as long as the overall diameter/circumference is the same, which it is. Thus the Toyota Prius temporary spare is an appropriate solution.

    So, then, either a 16" OR 17" donut/temp spare would work?

    Any idea if the center bore of each is the same 54.1 mm as the stock wheels?

    I've heard this exact measurement is critical...

    Yes, either 3rd (16” dia) or 4th (17” dia) temp spare rim is 100% compatible. You’d need to research the part nos. Dealership parts department can handle that. Check prices too. All being equal, my pref would be 3rd gen (16” dia), since the corresponding tire is a better OD match.

    Might this complete kit be appropriate?

    eBay seller confirms the 5X100 pattern and 54.1 center bore, but believes the offset may be @ 44 mm (difficult to determine with tire mounted):

    The Toyota temp spare rims (either 3rd or 4th gen) have part nos. Unfortunately the Toyota USA parts website has gone through a disastrous “upgrade” recently, but you should be able to track them down. You could check part nos on a site like Amayama, and maybe some dealership website. Or phone a dealership parts department.
