Hello first time poster here to prius chat I have a 2013 Toyota Prius generation three that is overheating. When I drive for long periods of time especially on the freeway at high speeds uphill the overheating light comes on, and the check engine light comes on, and it has slow acceleration uphill. it seems like when it hits that high speed, and when going uphill, it seems to burn off coolant because the tank is empty after the engine light comes on. I filled it with more coolant fluid, and the check engine light went off and so did the overheating light. I don’t notice any leaks or any corrosion coming from any part of the system or water pump. I do notice some dried very small amounts of coolant near the radiator cap. I replaced the radiator cap and it didn’t fix the problem. There is a small valve on the reserve tank that may be releasing it. I’m thinking that the thermostat might be stuck closed. Also, when I have the car running and fully hot, it doesn’t seem that the coolant fluid from the radiator is not returning to the reserve tank. Any ideas what the problem could be? Thank you.

How many miles on the car?

I would assume that your engine coolant water pump is going bad and needs to be replaced ASAP.

Your car needs to go to the ER immediately.
What you're experiencing is the automotive equivalent of non-fatal heart attack symptoms that will ultimately result in a non non-fatal heart attack.
Go to an independent repair shop immediately and describe your symptoms.

Tell them that you have a 2013 PRIUS with coolant issues and you want them to do a cylinder leak-down test after they check your coolant system.
If they ask why, politely thank them for their time, pay them for any work that they have done and look for a more competent mechanic.
What you are ruling out is a head gasket failure that will only get worse and worse from the temperature excursions that your motor is experiencing.
    Stay away from the dealership.

    Good Luck!

Cool and just disappearing from the jug blowing off You know it's blowing off? You probably need to check your codes and see if you have any cylinders getting ready to misfire or holding codes for misfiring That's probably going to be next at the point of this coolant blowing off and disappearing If you are extremely lucky you've caught this early enough but it sounds like this has been something that's been reoccurring and going on semi often an engine is probably in the future of this vehicle. Beware of that

Because you have a 2013, Gen 3 Prius, your system doesn't have a "reserve tank"; that was an older style system where the tank was a kind of stagnant backwater that only accepted coolant expanding out of the radiator and held it to be sucked back in on cooling.

the Gen 3 cooling system is a degas-bottle system where that plastic degas bottle is an integral part of the cooling system and coolant circulates right through it. So the level showing there just is the level of your coolant; if the bottle empties, you've lost a bunch.

I wasn't quite sure how to read the multiple negatives in "it doesn't seem that the coolant ... is not returning", but anyway, knowing that is an always-connected degas bottle and not a reserve tank that anything would need to return to, the picture is a little simpler.

Thank you all for your help. I am currently replacing the water pump and thermostat together with fresh coolant. I’m thinking it’s one of the two parts there. When I have the car turned on and the AC turned off the car is completely engine silent, but there is kind of a whining sound coming from the water pump. I have read that the water pump is going out if you hear that. The car has 200,000 miles on it and if this doesn’t fix the problem then I will chalk it up as preventative maintenance. anyways, I will keep you guys posted with an update. Thanks again for your help.

I just replaced the water pump and the thermostat. The water pump looks to be the problem. There’s a magnetic rotating part in there that is defective. You can buy that part separately for $40. Car is still up on jackstands. Planning on adding new fluid and a oil change tomorrow and test drive. Keep you updated. Here’s some photos of that part.
