Tires size possible deal breaker on 2023 Prius?

    Tires at the dealer are never inexpensive. I also buy tires that are higher quality (higher list price), but bought through low cost vendors. The Nokian WR series tires I have used on my Prii over the years cost me a little over $100 each, but they are great tires. I don't skimp on tires.

    I'll be happy when tires are available for my 2023 LE AWD at such a good price. Nokian are great tires, I ran them on my Saabs.

    My $100 price was for 185/65HR15 tires so there will be a price difference for the larger tires on your 2023 Prius.

    I searched for tires for XLE Prius and only found Michelin for $263 each at Tire Rack. Ouch!

    It’d be interesting to see the MSRP for rims, 17” and 19”. Dibs on $490 USD.

    I just had to replace a tire (19") on mine due to a bubble - it was covered through the dealer so I didn't pay anything but the listed price was $187. Worse was the delivery time, took two weeks. I'm contemplating buying an extra just to keep in case I need one more urgently.

    I wonder how long they warranty the tires for. When I buy my tires they typically come with a hazard warranty. The tires on a new vehicle must still have a manufacture warranty. I would be in a huge bind with a two week wait but have no room to store a full size spare.

    That’s what i’m starting to think. And if you buy a full size rim and tire, you can always use it as part of the rotation

    I looked on another website and found these. ? What I don’t understand for those of you thinking of buying a full size spare tire…how do you rotate the spare into the rotation. I also don’t understand how the spare donut tire doesn’t eventually rot because it’s not being used. IMG_6270.png

    A compact spare does eventually go bad even if not being used. I give them a max of ten years before I feel they're no longer safe and reliable.

    Tire rotation with a full size spare:
    Every time you rotate the tires, the spare goes on one of the corners and one of the corners becomes the spare. The Forward Cross in this diagram: (just follow the arrows)

    I've read spares have a ten year service life. It's longer than the regular tires, as it is sheltered from the sun. For the other tires, it is 6 to 7 years.

    Many tires today are directional and should only be rotated front to rear. The spare is usually not included in the rotation in those cases.

    Assuming a side wall puncture, single female, no family member available to help and no car to borrow. My typical situation. : }

    Which set up would you go with? I’m thinking full size spare is best except for the compromised fuel economy. Eventually there won’t be a two week wait for replacement tire.

    Am I getting this right?

    1.With the small temp spare, I pay aprox $500 so I have all that is needed to secure it in place. With spare I know I can drive about 50 miles at 50 mph and currently might have to wait 2 wks for a replacement tire.

    2. I purchase a full size spare. I’m buying the wheel and tire. AAA changes the tire and I’m on my way. This would be additional weight carried around 24/7. How would I secure this? Has anyone done this already? Does it fit?

    3. I buy a spare tire for the cargo space and include it in tire rotation. (I’ve already confirmed tires are not directional). I still have to get towed because the tire can’t be replaced on the side of the road, right? Advantage being no wait time for ordering tire.

    one alternative might be to only carry the spare, full or compact, only when you’re on an extended trip. With my AWD sienna, when i changed out the ‘runflats’ and ventured out of town, i carried a full size spare that I’d bought.

    Although you probably don’t want to be hauling a tire in and out of your car.

    Oh- i think AAA would change your tire at side of road, full or compact, if they felt it was safe to do so.

    Thanks. That’s the problem. I don’t have a place at home to store the full size spare or the wife (husband in my case) to come rescue me. : ) If temp spare kit wasn’t so expensive, I should probably go with that. It’s what I’ve lived with for 40 yrs.

    People are saying car comes with jack and tools- keep old tools if you can ;). So maybe not too bad just to buy the compact spare and the hardware to lock it into your car’s floor.

    Yeah, it all depends on what you're willing to pay and trade off. And you are right, I just got my LE and it does not have a spare.
