I got this message after pluging into a non-functioning charging station. Somehow the plug was not working but I left it there anyway and got that message after I returned and started the car.

I then drove the car home and the next time I started the vehicle the message was gone. Plugged it in to my home charging station overnight and the car was fully charged since. The message hasn't came back. Any ideas? Should I be concerned?

Went to service and they said to come back if message return.

Should you be concerned? Nop , i guess the car can't tell you precisely what went wrong so you get this '' general '' message.
If your car charge just fine with your home charging station .. it mean that the other charger was defective or there is a problem with it.
You could try another plublic charger to verify and confirm.

I tried another public charger with same brand and it works. so confirmed it's the charger station issue, maybe triggered some protection mechanism in the hybrid system and caused the message, and disappeared overnight.

Yeah, sound like you answered your own question. The malfunction was in the non-functioning charging station, not in your car.

48 hours old and charged one time!

I'm currently at the dealership because I encountered an error with my Prius. For the past ten years, I've consistently purchased two Prius vehicles at a time for both my wife and myself, and we've never experienced any "error codes" until today. I'll keep you posted on what the dealer says in response. Last night, I plugged the car into the charging station outside my house, and to my pleasant surprise, it was fully charged to 100% when I woke up. However, I started receiving the error message mentioned earlier.

    Plug-in Charging System Malfunction“
    be back with update soon!

Just an update, but not quite! They said it may have been caused by me placing one 50lb bag of food and a 50lb bag of chicken food in the back of the car, which ended up exerting too much pressure on the cooling fan under the back hatch of the car. What? I've never had any problems with ANY of my Priuses, especially related to loading. My wife and I have both driven them without encountering any problems. Anyway! The "error caution light" is back on again, and it came on during its third charge ever. I'm taking it back in today. This is the second service visit in a week of ownership! Not good! I'll provide another update soon!

I do recall someone having an issue caused by cargo in the back. It was a large speaker that they happened to place in the right spot for the magnet to interfere with some component under the cargo floor.

If weight alone is enough, then the car can't be used for long trips.

    Here’s the Update:

It’s some sort of manufacturing defect Toyota is aware of and as of now there is NO solution. They are going to get back to me once they find an answer to the problem is sometime in the Unkown future. So, for now my brand new car throws errors, chirps, and doesn’t let me view the data as I drive, because if continuously tells me tho in and see my dealer. The new car excitement I had was gone at 87 miles. Sucks! It’s like wearing a dirty shirt to party ever day

...bummer... I sympathize with you....a brand new prime....,Toyota has to address problems of this new generation and find the quirks as soon as possible.
by the way this topic should be in the Gen 5 forum....just to keep track ...because this question was a topic there

Wow, that sucks! Post up the fix when it comes. This is the main reason I don’t buy the first year of a new car.

I also got this message after 2 weeks of ownership on July 4th. Took it in to Toyota and was told similar thing that there is no remedy and there is a case open. I was told it a failure of fan component that cools plug-in charger. The service supervisor told me I can still charge but it will stop charging when it overheats. That didn't sound safe to me so I got a second opinion from the service manager who said he didn't recommend charging for now which I haven't in almost 2 more weeks. I was also told the fix could sometimes be a software update or a physical component replacement or repair.

Just got this error in my 2023 this morning. Heading on a 6 hour out of town trip. I will be calling the dealership while on the way...

I got both the charging system malfunction and a CEL, btw.

Hi…My Prime is expected to be in my driveway in 30 days. Should I be expecting to have this issue? Thx in advance.

it doesn't seem to be happening to everybody, but it is a possibility. i doubt anything has been fixed at the factory yet, since they haven't quite figured out the problem.
but i could be wrong, or they might fix it when at quality control when it comes into port.

So I'll update a little here...
Dealership looked at the codes and said that they were both pointing to the same thing. A fan in the charging unit. They've ordered the part and cleared the codes. Said there were only 10 of the part in the entire country. I plan on calling them tomorrow now that it's been almost 2 weeks and we'll see where we are. They told me I can drive the car as normal but not charge it.
