i haven't seen any issues so far. i suppose that if the powers that be continue to ignore the grid, there will be future problems with or without ev's. but everyone needs a whipping boy as an excuse for their behavior
Well, the power grid in Texas probably can’t, but then again, it can’t handle cold weather, can’t handle hot weather, either! As far as the rest of the country? Shoot, it isn’t anything they have to worry about with our current political situation in which no party wants to admit the need to switch from fossil fuel to EV technology anytime soon. At least not in any real way. just ignore this post, it is just my frustration with the whole political situation in this country. Sorry about that.
I just saw this as well and despite being a typical so called liberal media outlet seemed to parrot off the same tired worst case scenarios that exaggerate I’ve seen coming from Republicans for years.
Sooner or later, the power grid will HAVE to 'handle' the EV boom. There will be some bumps along the way but there's a lot of bucks at stake. I've often imagined out loud that there will someday be a smart-grid consisting of an intelligent source-load balance among the many BEV batteries, PV banks, and other 'sources.' That's right. BEVs plugged into the grid can be both a load AND a source... Dot.gov just needs to lay down some streamlined regulatory guard-rails and get the hell out of the way.
Time of day pricing solves the problem. Guess that 16 kW, natural gas fueled, automatic, emergency generator installed in 2016 was a good idea. I don't care for the two-cylinder, air cooled engine but natural gas powered, fuel cells are a promise not a product. Bob Wilson
NATGAS is a damn good solution, and I think that LNG tankers (barely portable nuclear weapon simulators) should be outlawed in the US unless they arrive empty. The US does NG cleaner, more efficiently, and with less corruption than most if not all the other producers. Stifling our capacity forces demand to be met elsewhere - less efficiently. Climate is GLOBAL. My hurricane genset is still portable and manual, but it IS a dual-fuel - although I would only use petrol if I were forced to. My intentions are to dry-pour a slab, and install a rain shelter and wire a manual interlock - which will also make my house grid-tie solar compatible. This way I can do the cost-benefit analysis if the genset goes TANGO-UNIFORM, and assess some DIY solar in the near future. The last hurricane taught me that I can get by with about 5kw. I'm going to double that and keep it portable and scalable. I also intend to outfit my garage for B(PH)EV charging as a land-grab. Someday the government will stop paying people to drive BEVs and start taxing them. THAT's when they will start being more obviously real-world affordable to the 99-percenters who are not EVangelists. When that happens I will start driving the droid version perhaps, or at least a PHEV. TWO sources are almost always better than one.
