A family member driving my 2007 Prius rear ended another car severely damaging the left front corner of the car. The car did not have comprehensive coverage and the body shop says it will cost $10k to repair. So I'm trying to figure out the best way to dispose of the car, short of donating it to my local public radio station.

The body shop confirmed that the car is legal to drive (as long as I indicate left turns with my arm out the window). The air bags did not go off. Both batteries are in excellent shape (main was replaced with Toyota battery a few years ago, starting was replaced six months ago). All season Michelin tires are one year old. The Michelin snow tires which are currently on the car are four months old. Engine was regularly serviced by a local shop that specializes in Toyota hybrids and was last checked six months ago when the small battery died.

I had every intention of keeping the car a few more years. My local mechanic offered to move the battery into another used Prius if I bought one. But circumstances are such that I probably need to get rid of the car as soon as possible.

    Any suggestions? Thank you

So the car was in such a bad front end collision on the front corner of the car but the body shop says it's safe to drive you'll have to put your hand out the window to indicate turns No you just plug up an amber light up there anyway I find that I'd love to see the pictures of this car You would be 10K Yes in a body shop. But not in a body shop and all kinds of things can happen or not in a body shop with certain types of signage outside of it and things could be really different Not that I would advocating spending 3 to $10,000 on a 2007 car but I have several parts cars here so snatch in the front fender and a few pieces underneath it banging and bending something back out to hang said fender on a car frame not a real big deal for people that do work on things so possibly but I would be able to just use the sum of all the parts you have on any one of my other vehicles that already exist here and that would be that but for most people this is not going to happen so that car gets parted out you can save the few year old Toyota battery so if it's three or four years old you got six maybe it'll go etc etc then that means you have to buy a generation two or three Prius to use that battery Right now those cars are being sold at a premium because that's what the market is for people hopefully soon that will get rectified because this nonsense is insane people are paying $5,000 for cars that I would have paid $1,000 for 3 years ago and have paid have receipts for that's why I haven't bought anything since the pandemic started like that because everything just went five times higher just because.

Thank you for the replies. Here's a picture of the car. Hopefully, it helps explain why the car may still be drivable while needing $10k of body work. 0.png

Try another body shop? Ask the mechanic for a more detailed description of the problem and post that here. If the car is safe to drive presumably nothing essential mechanically speaking is damaged.

It needs a hood, fender, bumper cover. That headlight may or may not be toast, can't really tell from the image. The styrofoam energy absorber on the bumper appears to be intact, so either the impact missed it or it wasn't all that big a boom. If only those items are needed, and the OP can do the work themselves, a trip to a pick your part and some elbow grease might be all that is needed. (Except that in my experience about 75% of the cars in those yards have been in a front end collision, so it might take some looking to find those parts, especially if the color has to match.)

On the other hand, if any part of the suspension or framework underneath all this is bent, then yeah, it would be expensive to fix. That sort of damage doesn't really comport with "safe to drive" though.

On Monday I will tackle repairing my daughter's 2008 Prius with very similar body damage. I used car - part.con and found matching color body parts, then I made a 600 mile rt drive to a salvage yard that had the key body parts the car needs. This is what I recommend you do!

Looks like the front windshield A pillar is bent out too. Show us a picture of under hood engine compartment see whats torqued under there.

What’s the mileage on the engine?

I assume you’re not an ace car mechanic if you were you’d already be doing what Pasadena recommended.

I would put it on Craigslists and ask for a BEST OFFER. Come on by make an offer I’ll let you know.

To me given that it has a fairly new hybrid battery it may be worth $2500 or more.. I know it’s worth more but only if you can find the right guy.

It’s a very popular car in my area. All my junk yards the G2s are picked clean.

That's not bad at all, can be fixed if you DIY for less than $1,000.

It just needs a hood, fender and bumper and possibly a broken radiator and condenser. Is the AC still working? Coolant not leaking?

The damage is very minor, I dealt worse than that.

Collision shops work with insurance companies and they charge really high.

I have some pics on my older red Prius that still runs at 270k miles..

and this is the tool I used from Harbor Freight, it paid itself so many times..repaired other cars

this is not your "official" collision shop repair..

To me it looks like the back of the fender is bent, not the pillar. The windshield isn't cracked and the rubber around it looks straight. The thermos bottle seems to be normally aligned, or at least very close to it. Can't see the front of the passenger door to tell if the fender was shoved into it hard enough to damage it. At first glance this looks like a relatively low speed impact, because the headlight isn't shattered (although its mounting tabs might have broken off), the styrofoam energy absorber seems to be in one piece, and the thermos isn't obviously displaced.

Agreed that the radiator bracket could be screwed up, if only from the hood dragging hard on the latch. If the car is "drivable" presumably the radiator isn't busted. (Unless that mechanic is in the habit of telling people to go forth and burn up their cars.)

What insurance coverage is on this car? If it doesn't cover theft you are really rolling the dice, since catalytic converter theft is rampant on this model, and it costs an arm and a leg to replace one in a CARB state, which Colorado is. The risk is reduced somewhat by installing a shield, but some thieves get through those too.

I assume the auto insurance company has shared their suggestion on what to do with your car right? If I were in your shoe I would have it repaired but look for a reputable car shop specializing in such kind of repair. The car may have some years to live.
