It would never have happened with me. It's very easy to ask how much is an oil change? I always ask how much before I buy anything. I never pay anything up front before the work (whatever that may be) is completed and I'm happy. Otherwise you're at their mercy....can't assume people are going to be fair and decent these days! Just another reason why I do my own....
About a year ago I paid almost $110 for an oil change at the dealer. It did include a tire rotation but where they get you is charging like $10 a quart and over charging for filter.. I think the crush washer was almost $3. Plus “shop supplies”…Now I buy my filters and crush washers from an online dealer. My price is: Oil: $25 Crush washer: 75 cents Labor (an actual mechanic): $30 OEM Filter: $4 No more waiting 2-4 hours at the dealer either. My mechanic can get me in and out within 30 minutes, plus they have large windows to the shop so you can actually see your car.
My wife just got charged $112 for her 2019 and was pretty shocked. I guess things just went up? She said it was $40 more than last time. I think she's about to end her relationship with the dealer. Last year she was quoted $1200 for filters and tires and I was able to save her about $700.
Holy overcharging, Batman! I can see, maybe, a California dealer charging that but NEVER in Florida! (I've heard of mechanics in California having to charge $400 an hour for jobs just to stay in business....cost of living is insane there.) If you buy me a Mountain Dew and bring a jug of oil and a filter, I'll do it free on my Quick Jack lift in the garage!! I'll let you use my cool cordless impact drill to remove the lug nuts and we'll do a tire rotation while we have her up!!
There have better been complimentary popcorn, shoe shine and masseuse on premise while waiting for engine oil change.
Justin oil change no tire rotation. I can't believe what they charge. $210 per hour for a person to change oil. He's not even a mechanic. Never ever again no matter what. I could have bought a wrench and a drain pan at Walmart done the oil change and thrown away the wrench and the drain pan afterwards
My Toyota dealer charges me $0 (FREE!) for a synthetic oil change at 10k/1 year intervals. He does this for the life of any car purchased at his dealership (A1 Toyota in New Haven, CT). JeffD
NO ONE if forcing anyone to go to a dealer. There are places that charge less and will do it correctly. Learning to do it yourself will allow you to put that labor money into something useful.
