I notice the protocol this forum is suggesting is cleaning the entire EGR circuit (intake manifold, EGR pipe, valve, and cooler) and the installation of an oil catch can. The one thing I don't see suggested, which is what the dealer was doing during warranty repairs and what the car nut was suggesting, was updating the ECU via techstream software update. Is no one here suggesting that? After getting a cheap laptop and a cheap universal cable, Techstream subscription and tsb download is $70 for 2 days to download the (TSB 00-27-16). The bulletin also includes directions to update the ECU. I don't know if third party / nondealer egr cleaner places would be subscribing to techstream.

I “think” the software update was for the updated valve. The efficacy of both is not that clear.

Things don't always go well with pirated software. You could brick your ecu....

Is it clearly stated in (TSB 00-27-16) that it's for after an 'updated EGR valve' is installed?

I'm all for getting the latest and greatest SW, even if I have to pay for it.;)
I'd really be happy if this new SW has better sensing for when EGR flow is less than what is expected/needed!

Techstream is available for a 2 day subscription at $75. It's cheaper for Europeans. Legal subscription includes website downloads for TSB ECU updates and not just Techstream.

The TSB only applies to those w/ a check engine light and/or rattle and within certain states and <150k miles and 180 months in certain states and a shorter period in others.

At least 4 dealerships and Toyota Parts are unclear whether there was an updated EGR valve or intake manifold and what change was involved. Some said that new parts numbers could be issued due to supply chain updates e.g. when Toyota uses a new parts supplier and may not necessarily be an update. Funny thing they said is that they haven't seen too many egr or headgasket failures with water pump failures being the most common.

The TSB includes the valve kit with part number 04004-58137. The dealer Toyota parts number for the valve includes 25620-37110 and 25620-37120. Replacement could be the 20 version.

    Intake manifold has 5 parts numbers, 17120-37050, 17120-37051, 17120-37052, 17120-37053, and 17120-37054.

    Thanks for all this info.
Only what am I supposed to with this data?
Which is the latest and greatest,,,if I were to buy the upgraded Intake Manifold?

It’s curious, this slew of intake manifold iterations. I suspect they were at least in part attempts to prevent uneven EGR passage clogging.

My 2 cents:save your money, periodically clean the one you have.

Or if you really want to save your time and money disable the EGR system.
Is that a viable option? I'm still trying to figure that one out.... (n)
Brazilian Prii don't have the EGR system at all.
    Yikes !!
I have read here that some replace the water pump pre-emptively.
Now I have that to worry about....

Dealers don't clean. They only replace and replacement would be the latest or 25620-37120/17120-37054 regardless if there any improvements or not. Note that the TSB did not include intake manifold or cooler changes and only replaced the egr valve with a software update. Anyways we are talking about 13 year old vehicles with a 2010.

    Add another to the list.
    Fournier Motor (Charlotte, NC)

Mike@Fournier is a Prius specialist. I have been taking my 2010 Prius there last few years. Recently, started to misfire and shuddering. Luckily head gasket was ok. EGR cleaned, replaced spark plugs, PCV.

What’s the miles? Considering the “misfire and shuddering” I’d trust-but-verify: keep an eye on engine coolant level, for starters.

Reinvolt was also in Charlotte NC IIRC, a Prius hybrid battery specialist.

    Approx. 125k miles
Coolant level..amen. No leaks so far, pressure check was also done to rule out head gasket issue.
    Reunvokt..good to know..thx.

    Anyone have an EGR diagram?
Could I connect hoses to the EGR inlet, and loose, open EGR tube end at intake manifold.
A circuit thru a gallon of cleaner with small powerdrill and small fluid transfer pump($8.95).
I would hold driil trigger to low speed and let it run 1 hr,change cleaner and do again.
    1. Could I block EGR outlets ( rubber plug) to isolate chambers to clean?
    2. What liquid cleaner
    a. First wash with ....carb cleaner?
    b. Second wash with Oxy clean?
    feasibility study

    Goo Gone
A strong thinner and maybe dilute with a less volatile mineral spirits
    Vinegar
Set aside 3-4 days and give a good overnight soak of each step.

The carbon hating people will surely know the sacred rituals to
    defeat carbon.

Not a good idea to throw cleaner or water down through that......
You must take it apart to properly clean it.
Then use oven cleaner and a pressure washer to clear that cooler out.

Whatever the cleaner/method, I’d do it with removed from the car and disassembled components.
