I have a 2012 gen 3 Prius with 105k miles, i've had it about a year. Runs great. It does burn oil but i been told thats very common in these vehicles. One thing i noticed is that when the traction battery goes down to 2 bars when i accelerate out of Idle sometimes i get this quick rattle noise that lasts about 3 seconds while accelerating then goes away. Seems to happen more often when its hot outside. Any ideas on what could be causing this? Im assuming maybe the EGR cooler needs to be cleaned?
Noises are really hard to explain in words... Maybe get someone else to drive while you try to better find the source of the noise/more details?
A longshot, this won't cover most such noises --- Did the previous owner have a catalytic converter shield installed? If so, is it rattling against the converter under certain conditions?
This is why you don't work and rebuild open deck designed engines unless you are replacing complete sections like the center section that does the rattling with the reciprocating mass you'd be buying that new from lake Toyota for around $4,000 or a tad less $2,800 or something and then you have to have a remanufactured head decked and ready to go and all of that by the time you get all that assembled put together your at 7000 plus dollars You could just buy a JDM spec engine from Asia with around 70,000 mi on it for $1,100 $1,200 delivered to your door It cost me $800 to have that put in my car right here locally so for 2K . I have a low mileage takeout installed in my car and I'm ready to drive That's a far cry from 8000 now I'll take that 65 or $70,000 mi engine and run that out to 300K without any problem. Then if I still have the car then it will be completely trashed anyway and be ready to do something else
I have not. How much would that cost to have someone clean it? How much does it cost to replace? Usually only happens when the traction battery is at two bars and it’s hot outside and I accelerate from a complete stop.
it sounds like this but only lasts for a couple seconds while accelerating from complete stop with the traction battery at two bars usually when it’s hot with the AC on.
Ok I found a similar post with the exact same problem. I guess it’s the EGR valve and intake manifold is getting clogged. So I will look into getting it cleaned. How much could I expect to pay generally at mechanic or dealership? Someone said something about a extended warranty but I’m sure that’s expired by now.
Please use the multi-quote function. Otherwise, you look like a spambot with this many posts in such a short period of time.
i've read around $800. to a thousand. biggest problem is getting them to understand the complete procedure, dealer or private mech. toyota is in denial, so they don't offer instructions. definitely check on the warranty, you never know.
Could just be a little pinking noise, mine has done this intermittently for years... Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
