Recently purchased the 23' XLE AWD model since my dealership had that available and not the limited. Since the rear window has pretty limited visibility I was intrigued by the digital rear view mirror. Is it possible to install OEM digital rear view mirrors on the lower trims? Undoubtably would cost a hefty amount as it's outside the factory, but more or less curious as I'd still consider. Thanks! (Also a litttleeee curious about the 360 degree camera system)
DRM availability has been spotty at best in their supply chain and since it's used in nearly every model, vehicles like the Sienna with its roof mounted TV screen option need them badly. Folks trying to source it together have found it both frustrating and expensive. Search aftermarket solutions instead if you really want one. Those work "OK" IMO.
Best Buy and Amazon sell aftermarket DRMs that come with their own rear camera that you install including stringing the wire to the mirror that fits over the original mirror. They are inexpensive enough that one of them could be worth a try if you are motivated enough to install it. "Bird's eye" or 360 degree cameras are also available but much more complicated to install because they involve multiple cameras that are then stitched together by software. We have both in our Rav4 hybrid and love them. I thought about adding a DRM to my Mazda CX-30 (which replaced my Prius) but got used to using the blind spot warning and positioning the side mirrors to see the blind spot.
This is the actual unit Toyota uses: Full Display Mirror It's made by Gentex(the company that makes the lion's share of all automotive mirrors). It doesn't look like Gentex is currently selling the exact model as an aftermarket product(yet). You can get a display mirror, a mirror with HomeLink buttons, but you can't get a unit with both features like the ones Toyota puts in their vehicles. The display version currently available runs around $900, and comes with a camera that mounts to the inside of the rear window. https://www.voxxelectronics.com/gentex/full-display-rear-view/?sku=GENFDM3LN If you want to go full OEM, you'll have to wait until the built-in rear camera becomes available from Toyota Parts and then do some wiring since the XLE probably has a different wiring harness than the Limited and doesn't include the connectors you'd need. Option 3 would be to get a new shark fin antenna(or mod the existing one) that includes a camera instead of just sticking the camera to the rear window. But that would mean pulling down the headliner to run new wiring.
I was just toying with "build a Prius" on thier site and didn't know about the mirror. In looking around, I found this on amazon; URVOLAX 12" Mirror Dash Cam Voice Control,Car Backup Rear View Mirror Camera with Detached Front Lens,1296P Full HD Digital Rearview Dual Split Screen,Night Vision,Smart Parking Assist,GPS] I don't know if it has all the features that the OEM does. But I am seriously thinking about trying it.
I install a Wolfbox G850 as dash and digital rearview mirror. Is a cheaper option and cover the issue to the small rearview mirror and also double down as a dash cam. I was able to install it myself and add a usb type A power adapter so I don't have too use the type C or 12V ports. I was able to hide all wires and adapter behind the rearview mirror casing.
I really thought we made a mistake by not going with the LTD w/ digital rearview and PVM. These were absolutely game changer for my Tundra and I don't think I can ever drive a truck without it again. However, with the Prius, I have never once felt that I wish I had the digital rearview, let alone PVM for a car as small as this. Now... if retrofitting the digital rearview is simple plug-n-play and the XLE has the existing harness, and I'm able to source the hardware for cheap, I would take a stab Finding the part #s is on my research list...
