Taking off head housing

    Yes this is what you need. It may be the difference between a successful hg job and one you get to do again. A new timing chain and tensioner is a good idea as well. Be sure the timing chain cover rtv at the seams is done right.

    Too expensive, not needed. Chains aren’t really an issue in these engines and the parts are extremely expensive. If the tensioner was not extended by a unusual amount, I would reuse all of the components.
    Plastic razor blade for large pieces of carbon. If the surface is smooth, I’d just reassemble after a clean up with brake clean.

    I ended up getting a straight-edge and verified that there was no warpage. I have already put on the head and now I am working on the Cam Shaft Carrier.

    Unfortunately back when I was taking things apart I cracked one of the Cam Shaft holder bridges so I had to get a new Cam Shaft carrier. I was able to transplant the shafts to the new carrier, but obviously the cam position got lost in the mean time. My thought is to line everything up to the ideal position manually by individually rotating the cam shafts and crank, as described here:

    Before I put on the cam housing I want to confirm that I have the right idea. Attached are some photos.

    Also, how do I turn the crank if there is no bolt there? do I just have to temporarily screw the bolt back in without the cover?

    So I renewed my TIS subscription and found the camshaft installation guide and was able to follow it and put on the timing chain. Can someone double check that I matched up all the marks properly? Let me know if any more pictures are needed.
