My hybrid battery in my beloved 2010 Prius gave the dreaded triangle of death and the P0A80 yesterday with only 113,000 miles.

Seems Toyota no longer sells a hybrid battery for it. I would have bought one from Toyota.

Can I please get some recommendations from those that bought a new hybrid battery? I don’t think I want a “refurbished” battery, I’ve given this car to my son who starts college next year and I want it to last 4+ years. The car is otherwise flawless and we want to keep it.

Appreciate any help this forum might give!

    toyota still sells the batteries.

alternatively, project lithium is an option, for around the same price

The modules in a Gen4 battery will work in your Gen3.

    I would hope so.

Is it possible to get a battery straight from a Toyota dealer a la cart (not having them install it)? I seem to remember not being able to find a case of someone purchasing a battery that way. Anyone ever done it?

I purchased parts from McGeorge Toyota at good prices in the past but the battery is shown as not available.

As an update, I got the Dr. Prius app and I have one module bad. So I plan to replace the bad module tomorrow with a used replacement from eBay. Let’s see how that goes. If it doesn’t work I’m only out $70 and a little time.

Like, with no install? I could drive my truck up there, pay, then put it in the back and drive home?

I guess that makes me feel better. I see them for $1800 all the time and I've seem them less than that. I still feel like I've heard of people having trouble getting one without them insisting on diag/install markups, core charge issues, etc. I remain slightly skeptical. That'd be the dealership near me.

All the dealers are different, some do and some don’t.
All you can do is call around and ask

#Nancytheprius on this forum did it a few months ago. She just called them and showed them the codes that she got. I think the people at the parts counter just want to make sure you know what you are doing and have the DIY ability to do the repair. I have videos and pictures of when I took apart my wifes prius to install kilmatz and when I replaced all the shocks and struts in both cars. That should help me make my case. Project Lithium is also a great choice and If I was sending my child to college I would do that. $600 a year for 4 years is a great piece of mind investment for a father. IMHO.

I looked into this more and it seems like most any dealership near me is going to have a $1350 core charge. This again makes me question the ability to deal with a dealership without them touching your car. I'm gonna guess many of them won't accept a core off-the-streets so to speak, giving them an excuse to charge you a full dealership special.

This puts the lithium battery back at the top of the list for me since you get to keep your core, which is fairly valuable working or not.

Project Lithium seems to be very successful. I would warn you to order ASAP as supply demands overseas are bad. Unless you have another car you could wait 3-6 months for them to be back in stock. If in stock and YOU have decided......then buy now. I've been watching them for like 15 months and limping both our batteries along but with 3 cars and we could get away with 1 car for 6 months or so....its hard to cough up the money.....until I HAVE too.:)

I used the Dr. Prius App which showed my last battery block was a lot lower, #14 which is 2 batteries, to be low compared to the others. I bought 2 reconditioned ones and it was easy to replace them. Taking our batteries out is easy. I learned that I had a lot of corrosion on my bus bars…cleaned them and installed the new batteries (not sure that i needed them) and all is fine. It’s taking a long time for the “permanent” P0A080 to clear but the car has no checks engine light and runs perfectly.

Seems my problem was likely corrosion on the bus bars cause my battery cells were all about 7.7 V. live and learn! Clean those bus bars and see what happens!

Permanent code will go away on its own after 1,500 miles or so could be 2,000-2,500 but I cant really remember since its been a while since I got the Lithium HV upgrade.

If it doesnt by then, you will get another code telling you which block is bad again.

The vehicle automatically removes a permanent code if the malfunction is no longer detected on 2 consecutive trips. Each code will have a different set of conditions that must be satisfied during the trip for the car to be able to render that judgement.
    upload_2023-4-16_12-26-28.png
For P0A80, those conditions involve performing a universal trip followed by draining the HV battery to 30% SoC (by leaving the car in neutral). And since the conditions need to be met on 2 consecutive trips, the minimum distance one would need to drive to remove the codes would be 2*(25 mph)*(5 min)*(1/60 h/min) = 4.2 miles.

SO drive 2 different trips of 5 miles each time above 30 mph and then sit in neutral to drop the SOC to below 30 percent.....twice....and you are good.(y)

Wow this is terrific info! Thanks Mr. F.

As dirty as my bus bars were (the car lived in Miami for its first 6 years) I am now thinking that corrosion caused my issue. I can tell you those bus bars are spic and span now! Hope my problem is solved in my beloved Prius.

I lived in South Beach off and on for 3 years. The salt water definitely is rough on metal causing corrosion. Someday I will tackle cleaning mine just need to be home to do it. It will be a great improvement for sure.

It’s surprisingly easy to do…wish I’d done it sooner!
