Considering buying a 2016. Thoughts?

They won't do the bypass at all, even if you ask—"compromising an essential pollution control device". Unless they've relaxed that position more recently.

So you have to wait, however long it takes, for the backordered exhaust part to come in so they can replace it. And if you need to use the car before then, do the bypass yourself, or find some shady anarcho-mechanic to do it for you.

 

4 years ago with 50,000 miles that car sold for $17,000. Why would it cost more 4 years later

 

After lurking a while this seems an appropriate spot for a first post: I just bought a 2016 Two w/ 60k miles for 21K. No I'm not happy about the fact that I paid only a little less than initial MSRP but the fact is the market has changed radically in the past few years and there's no point pretending that current used car prices will revert back to pre-2020 value. The car I purchased was the lowest priced 4th gen listed for 25 miles, maybe 50 and is right in line with dealer prices nationally.

I was on the verge of buying a new Mazda CX-30 instead when I happened to come across the Prius on the lot. I crunched numbers and considered the long game: there is a rapid transition to electric and carmakers are creating pricey tiers with limited supply with electric at the top and ICE sifting to the bottom. Given today's EPA news this will only escalate. Used car prices continue go *up* and that means hybrids are positioned as the best option until the EV infrastructure brings prices down across the board.

Unless Toyota manages to flood the market and add low APR (both unlikely), I don't see used Prius prices going down much. It'll be at least another year before the Gen 5s are a regular sight on the road. The resale value on used has basically been 'reset'.

And IMO Gen 4 has a design that is aging very well. I prefer it to Gen 5 frankly.

How do you like your 2022? I’m probably driving everyone nuts on here. I passed on a 2022 XLE silver because I wanted to see the 2023 before deciding. I was afraid I would want the newer body style and now I’m regretting my decision. I love the expansive view of the 2022 windshield. Only hesitation was the ground clearance and having older body style for the next 10-12 yrs.

The 2023 windshield is so flat and less of an expansive view. Feel a bit claustrophobic. Plus low seats and entryway.

There is a 2020 XLE wind chill with 17k miles available but it’s 30k. Only 4k less than 2023 XLE plus I’ll miss out on 3 yrs of warranty. It does look nice and has the 15 inch tires I was hoping for. Maybe a 2022 silver XLE will magically appear out of nowhere. I just went to visit the 2020 in the dark tonight. I saw a blue painted dot on the left side of windshield and left headlight. Trying to search online to see what this means. Any ideas?

I’ll probably have to get 2023 and see how it goes. I’ve never traded a car for an older model but I guess it’s not unheard of.

 

I really like my ‘22. After having just at 15 months the only thing I would do differently would to have gone with the Prime since I realize now that I will be keeping it for a long time. Mine has the Nightshade package and sticker price was right at 32K.
If I was buying now and seeing what you are I would buy either year as long as the ‘22 was new, not used. I would want to start from scratch instead of risking someone else not taking care of it since reading a lot of the posts on this site.

 

Good grief, $22K is ridiculous! I paid $21K for my wife's 2017 new in 2018. (I think they had it at $23K or $24K but I have superhuman negotiating skills.)

Looking at my dealership in Colorado Springs, they have one used Prius, a 2019 LE with 73,000 miles for $25,500. Denver dealerships may have some but, last I checked, hybrids are hard to come by up there...high gas prices are killing people.
