I have a friend who is going to need to replace his front caliper on his 2005 Prius. The car has 230k mi. I think on it. Before he does it, he is wondering if he can bleed the brakes himself or does he need the dealership with their scan tools because of the hybrid ABS system?
If he is super careful and the only air to be bled out is right at the end of the line by the caliper, and none went up the line toward the actuator, he can probably get away with various folk bleeding procedures you see bandied about. If anything else happens, he'll need a scan tool that can kick off the bleed procedures, and that would be the best option for peace of mind even in the easy case. He can look over this thread for some options: Gen2 OBD2 app review | PriusChat
Before you disconnect if the new caliper you're getting is new remanufactured whatever take a syringe take some brake fluid take the zerk fitting out and try to pump some brake fluid to fill the void fill the big round part of the caliper which the pistons in lay the caliper so that hole is aimed up towards the sky take the syringe get it down in the little hole and squeeze some brake fluid in there till it runs back at you move the syringe away and watch and see if the level will drop in that fitting keep doing that until the level no more drops with the relays out and everything else prepped undo the caliper bolts just so they're loose unscrew the caliper line so it's loose take out the caliper bolts take out the caliper line pick up your other caliper still to the sky offer up the brake line get it in hand tight to where it's not totally leaking and dripping. And you should be good hydraulic wise at this point
