My 2007 Prius steering wheel recently started shaking. Here is the video What is the cause? What should I change?
I cannot tell whether that's the steering assist servo motor going crazy or whether you have something loose in the front end when this is in the video is the car driving moving forward or backward?
Yes in your video you're going down the road so if you stop at a stoplight or a stop sign the shake is gone or the movement of the steering wheel is gone correct? I would want to thank something as loose in your steering or your front end components tie rods whatever. Loose joints .
Gen 1 could notoriously get a steering-assist shake, because its steering torque sensor was a potentiometer that could wear out and give flaky signals to the assist ECU. Sometimes the wheel would shake like a wet dog. But Gen 2 changed the torque sensor to a style with no mechanical contact, and I really haven't heard of steering-assist shakes ever being a thing in Gen 2 or later. So I'd look for something mechanical to start with. If you've got a shake from the assist system in a Gen 2, you might be the first I've heard of.
So if the assist motor can't flake out then it's probably connection to the steering via the various connections drag link tie rod ends whatever all's up there
Some kinda slop in said linkage. Is what I've always found in all my cars that wound up doing anything like this First it would start with a clunk clunk inner and out of rack ends that sort of thing before that was the door closer steering arm and the pitman arm on the old style steering
My first thought is that one of your front tires is bad. Part of the tire can fail ("shifted" belts) which makes a lump in the tread. As the tire rolls over the lumpy spot, it "pushes back" through the steering linkage, shaking the steering wheel. Go get your tires (and steering - suspension) inspected ASAP. PS, make sure all lug nuts are tight, sooner than ASAP. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
You were right. Mechanic inspected and suggested to replace my bad tires ASAP. Replaced all 4 tires. No more shakes.
