Anybody in the Bergen Co. NJ or Rockland County NY area have any recommendations for good Prius techs/service departments for oil changes and other servicing/maintenance? I'm in Ramsey NJ; I know of various Toyota dealerships/service depts near me, but wondering if anybody has experience/recommendations for around here... Thanks!
Regular oil changes and maintenance can be done by anyone--it doesn't need a Prius tech to do it. It's only when you have anything to do with the hybrid system that you need a specialist. You can go to your regular mechanic for your regular checks, or do them yourself.
thanks. I guess I meant if anyone in the area goes to someone regularly that they trust. I've seen many complaints/warnings on PC that people have experienced mechanics who fill the oil all the way up to the "full" mark even though they've specifically asked them to fill only 3.5-3.75 qts, or they ignored requests to fill tires to 42/40, etc. I don't usually do my own maintenance, so if anyone in my general area has any favorite places they take their Prius, let me know! (And also that way, if a hybrid-related issue springs up, I already know mechanic/garage, know I can trust them, etc.) Thanks again...
I'm in central NJ, so I can't recommend anyone up north. I'm not crazy about my own dealer's service department, but I'm told that if you go to the Toyota site and enter your zip code to search for dealers, the listings include which awards the dealers have won from Toyota, some of which are awards for excellent service. I'm planning on using that technique to find a better service department near me.
I can not help you with local knowledge but I can repeat advice given here before and learned through experience. Go in to the dealer and ask to talk to the Prius Tech. Shake his (or her) hand and talk to them. Show your interest in the car and the technology. If this person is excited by the car and the technology that is who to go to. Request that person check your car. Keep in touch and invite them to log on to PriusChat. We can use a few more Prius Techs around here, keeps us honest!
I think that this is a good oppertunity to establish a new area within this forum. A section for repair shops sorted out by city or state. Which ones are good and which to avoid. Dealer vs. Independant. As more and more of these little wonders get on the road, and with the passage of time - I think there will be a great demand for repair shops that are not attached to the Dealer. Oh Mr. Moderator, is this possible?
