    Hi all,

Since we like our 2012 Prius C so much, and it has pretty much went to the daughter to drive ( in fact, it is far away in North Carolina ), we are thinking about picking up another C for use as a daily driver. Now that used prices are *starting* to fall ( but still have quite a ways to go ), I'm starting to look a bit closer.

A few questions for the gurus out there.
    • It appears that backup cameras are only standard on the FOUR models, except for 2018+ where they are standard on all models...correct? Kind of dumb they didn't add the backup camera on other models...especially the models that already have a console screen! o_O
    • Toyota Safety Senseā„¢ C (TSS-C) seemed to become standard starting in 2017..correct?
    • EPA MPG estimates seemed to drop 5 MPG starting in 2017. Some think it has to do with the EPA changing their testing cycle. Others think it has to do with the external refresh changes they made starting in 2017. I'm thinking probably a combination of both?
After all this research, maybe I'm a guru now as well...haha.

Anything else to be aware of? One interesting thing to note is that the Prius C has been the most trouble free of any of the Prius we have owned ( 2010 liftback and 2012 Prius V wagon ). The engine in the C seems to be very, very reliable compared to the 'Gen 3' models. (y)

Backup cameras were scheduled to be required everywhere for 2015, but industry lobbyists managed a last-minute punt that shifted the deadline to May 2018. So I can confirm that all 2018 c's have the camera, but I'm not certain of their distribution prior to then. You can tell they were ready to flip the switch much earlier.

I know less about the TSS timeline but again I can confirm that all the 2018s had it.

So far the weirdest thing to look out for (IMO) is the 16" wheel option available only on Fours. You probably don't want it: comes with somewhat lower MPG and a drastically wider turning circle. At least it looks pretty.

Runner up: In 2017 or 2018 (not clear to me) Toyota changed over to an even weirder, rarer 12v battery. So far it is haaard dealer-only availability, up from not available anywhere at all during the pandemic.

We made it to 71k before ours needed anything more serious than wiper blades or oil changes: a noisy wheel bearing. Good luck!

Is the 12v battery under the rear seat on all models? Honestly, it is kind of a pain in the butt to deal with it!

Yes same location through all years, but they changed the size, type (and bracket to hold it etc)

I made it to 93k on my 2013 C (Two) before I also needed a wheel bearing (Left, front) as the first repair.
But the front brakes were worn enough to justify doing them at the same time.
This little buggy has been fantastic - no wonder OP seeks another.

Timely post! We just had front brakes done on the 2012 C that our daughter has in North Carolina. I usually do the work myself...but it was just too hectic to get it done before we moved her. It pains me that I can't do the work myself on C anymore! However, we found a great shop in her area that are honest and do great work! According to the shop, the brakes had not been worked on for a LONG time, if ever. Yikes! I knew they needed work...but I didn't realize they were that overdue. Daughter says the brakes feel a LOT better now, so that's good.

I agree...the C really is a great little car. Believe it or not, with snow tires it is also a beast in the snow. Daughter drove it ALL winter, on a 25 mile each way commute before she move to NC. We have the snow tire set in the garage here collecting dust....so it would be great to have another C to use 'em on. (y)

Seems we also agree on the C in Snow. I have a set of Michelin X-Ice Xi3 on the original steelies. While not a deep-tread snow tire they are great on packed snow/ice and still deliver great MPGs.

We use the General Altimax Arctic on a set of rims held over from a Hyundai Accent- perfect match, and we also get good results in snow. Not that we've had any this year...
