If it's not concrete, I'd recommend some plywood bases, or gauge plate, if you can swing it. Also, maybe a little over-the-top, but I always like to push a chunk of tree stump I have under first, something thicker than my rib cage. And take along a cell phone.

Talk about unfair, I don't drink beer but I still have the gut. (must be the ice cream.)

Lastly, does anyone know much adequate clearance is needed (to lift up the prius) to perform most DIY work underneath? Thanks in advance!

I did a little measuring: the front bearing point I use is roughly 6.5" off the slab, when the car's down. The 6 ton safety stands I typically put in at that point have a cradle height roughly 15". So, a lift of 8.5". Now, that is generous clearance, more than enough. Maybe around 6" lift would be a decent mininum lift?

What are most ramps btw, 8"?

I tried this method a few minutes ago and it worked great! No problems at all

Regarding lift, has anyone of you homebrewed the 2 x 4 wheel cribs you see videos about on YouTube? They appear a little weak to me but guys swear by them. I think I prefer the ramps in the front and jack stands in the back? Fear drove me to it! LOL
