the battery in my 2013 Prius V is dying, lots of lights across the dashboard, OBD says one of the cells is weak, replacement seems imminent.
I've been thinking about a PHEV conversion anyway since I've never found a Prime V available for any price. Could I start that now by dropping a prime battery in? Will the Prius V system even recognize the new battery as a Prius battery? Can I add a shore power charger later on?
I've found good used prime batteries on eBay for less than the cost of a new/rebuilt replacement OEM battery.
    Thoughts?

that being said, you can certainly convert to a phev, but it will take a lot more than a bigger battery.

a lot more time, knowledge and money

And that's why I asked as a start, obviously you need to do more to it but while I'm replacing the battery can I go to the prime battery now?

no. firstly, it won't fit, although you can certainly customize something taking up hatch space.
    secondly, the bms won't work.
thirdly, it won't be much good without a plug, unless you live at the top of matterhorn.

I have no backseat and just mounted a full-size spare on the hitch rack eliminating the need for the donut. i have more room inside than most. My bigger question is BMS compatibility and what part of that would need to be changed.

I couldn't even give you a full list, but it would be a lot. Here are a few things to think about:

The Prime battery pack has a much higher operating voltage than the cordless Priuseses. So you'd be replacing anything driven by that battery: the transaxle & inverters, for starters. Possibly the air conditioner and power steering as well, but those might be taken care of by the inverter swap.

You'd want to use a Prime transaxle anyway. Real PHEV capability came to the Prime by way of a trick one-way clutch on the gas engine input to the transaxle. Without this clutch, the engine must spin for the vehicle to go much more than 40mph. And it would be silly to force an engine to spin on electric power when the original point was energy efficiency.

So now you're up to using the Prime battery, transaxle, battery ECU and the wiring harness in between, which may need to be lengthened. I don't think it's terribly likely that the Prime battery ECU is going to want to talk to a v hybrid ecu or engine ecu, so you might be bringing those as well. Then you're bringing over the instrument cluster and the body ecu to drive it. Hello full-custom dashboard.

Come to think of it, once you bring those you're pretty much committed to using the Prime heat pump HVAC system so that comes along too.

At a certain point, it looks like you are donating v sheet metal to a Prime rather than adding PHEV parts to a v.

I never like saying these things are impossible, but this one would be pretty darn difficult. I wouldn't start without at least one fully functional Prime from which to gather parts.

Thank you.....I totally get your point. I wasn't aware that they operated on different voltages (I see now that the Prime operates on 351V), that of course renders the entire point moot.
So I take it the PHEV conversion kits use different/custom batteries completely to achieve higher capacities while using the same voltages? Not sure how cost-effective that would be either since everything would be new/custom-built rather than used/refurbed. At some point it would be cheaper to buy a Rav4 LOL
I'll probably just go the stock replacement route

Nobody ever did it to save money. It was all about proving that it was possible; bragging rights.

@Leadfoot J. McCoalroller, I was having the same thoughts as you and was going to express them, but you beat me to it.

One member here (@Bill the Engineer) is doing something kind of along those lines. He's putting a classic Pontiac Firebird body on a Prius v chassis. Firebrid: The Prius v Powered Hybrid Convertible | PriusChat

Wouldn't it be amazing if Bill still had the Prius body and @Gene Floyd could weld it onto a Prime chassis? But it's not an easy job; he's been at it off and on for over eight years.

Not sure if you’ve researched battery replacement companies, but these guys have a good reputation and are located all over the country (and even in FL).
Last time I checked, they have three battery options (good, better, best). Starting at abt $1200, and they’ll come to your home or business to install.
