I see a lot of people posting that they lose their roof trim in car washes, that they wear off, flop around, etc. I have the same issue. However, can somebody tell me whether these things NEED to be replaced? Does it actually cause damage to the car if you don't? I don't want to spend $40 replacing something that's just gonna fall off again from either weather wear or car washes.

My molding fell off on one side and I never replaced it. I believe it’s merely cosmetic and that’s it.

Good question. My roof molding strips have been decomposing in the sun for years. I finally decided to look into replacing them - cheapest I can find for new ones is about $120

I think I'm going to run without them for a few months and see how that turns out.

If the roof-body panel sealing is intact, they're just cosmetic. That said, if the panel sealing is not intact, they may deter some water intrusion.
