Alright, I realize the "no spare tire" issue has come up many times in the forums, so I apologize. I read through many of the posts and one thing I did learn is that I can't replace the "tire repair kit" with a spare because I have a 2021 LE AWD and the rear motor bits are taking up that space. So what to do? For some context, I am hoping to drive the Dempster Highway this summer and continue to Tuktoyaktuk. I would love to be able to drive my Prius, but it is *strongly* recommended that you have at least one full size spare tire. This trip would involve my two teenagers and all our camping gear, so I don't believe I could fit even a donut spare inside the vehicle anywhere. Is it possible to add a roof rack or a rack of some sort on the back and carry a tire? I ask if it's possible because I haven 't seen anyone mention it as a solution, so I'm just wondering if a tire is just too large/heavy for that to work? If I can't find a way to carry a tire, I will have to either live dangerously or rent an SUV, and neither sounds especially great. Then again, not being mechanically inclined, I'll likely have to pay someone to install a roof rack or similar and that isn't too appealing either. Although we take long road trips every summer, we've never been unable to fit what we need into the car, so I'm also not sure the addition would be helpful after this one-time use. Anyone have any thoughts or ideas? Anyone ever driven the Dempster (or Dalton) in their Prius?
One idea would be a hitch mount carrier. Thank you for the links! Now that I'm seeing the pics and videos of the hitch mount carrier, I realize that's not going to be a good solution for me since the tire will be very much in the way of taking out/putting back our camping stuff every day. I guess I will have to look more at roof racks.
If you have a roof rack, Sidasu Roof Spare Tire Rack Carbon Steel Spare Tire Mount with Lock Spare Tire Rack Mount for Maximum 35 inches Diameter Tires. https://a.co/d/8RCvHlD
Thank you again! I don't have a roof rack (yet). Really starting from scratch here and it's proving to be a lot more complicated than I thought. I was hoping I could just get a roof rack installed and strap a tire to it with bungee cords or something. Guess not lol. I'm definitely going to have to add up the cost of what all is needed (roof rack + cargo cage + spare tire rack with lock etc etc + the actual tire) and find out if it's going to end up costing more than just renting an SUV for a week. It still might be worth it but honestly not sure at this point.
