Can anyone give me some idea as to where the power source ECU is located and how difficult it may be to switch out? Is this something that a non- Toyota mechanic could replace? Thanks!
The power source control ECU is located near the combination meter. I don't think it is very hard to replace. However it would probably be better to seek out a mechanic who specializes in Toyota vehicles to do that work - since that individual is more likely to have access to the required Toyota technical information. I am wondering how you came to the conclusion that the power source control ECU needs to be changed.
A short from an audio input device connected to the rear of the radio caused the following things to stop working: MFD, clock, radio, side mirrors, power outlets. Toyota dealer thinks it is the Power ECU but want to charge $1200 to replace. I can pick up a used one for $150 but have no idea how to go about replacing it. Do you know if the Power ECU needs to be calibrated in anyway?
If you are lucky, it may be that this can be accessed by pulling out the far left air duct, then the bottom and top panels that surround the steering column. Worst case would be removing the combination meter, which requires much more dash disassembly. Of course, you will need to disconnect 12V power, i.e. the battery negative cable.
I suggest that you subscribe to techinfo.toyota.com so that you can download repair manual info about how to reach that ECU. The ECU does not need to be calibrated. Before you replace that ECU I recommend that you personally verify that all of the relevant fuses are sound using an ohmmeter (rather than relying on visual inspection.)
Patrick Wong's last post mentioned where to find the information, but that was 2011 and we have a better wiki page about that now. Toyota Service Information and Where To Find It | PriusChat
