Compatible Toyota ABS?

    The ABS system on all Toyota sedans does more or less the same thing, yes? So is it possible that the ABS from, let's say a 2017 Corolla, would be compatible with the Gen 2 Prius? Not necessarily in how it bolts onto the car, it might need an adapter plate, but in the brake line connections and the electric circuits. My car doesn't need one yet, but I'm thinking that when it does, hopefully years from now, the most cost effective replacement would be one from a junkyard pulled from a much more recent yet compatible vehicle. That is, another gen 2 ABS could be found in the junkyard, but it will be just as old (more or less) as the one which failed. Risky and probably short term solution. And who know how long Toyota will keep making new replacements. Whereas that wrecked 2017 Corolla might have only had 40K miles on it, and would be less risky and still cost effective.

    I’d be very surprised if any major component of the brake system would be interchangeable. Among other reasons, consider the requirements for regenerative braking cooperative control and other functions that rely on CAN communication between the skid control ECU and the hybrid vehicle control ECU; in the 2007 Repair Manual (more info), see the chart under Brake: Brake Control: Electronically Controlled Brake System: System Diagram.

    The days of Johnny Cash’s a-daptor kit are long behind us, I’m afraid.

    OK, maybe not a regular Corolla, but perhaps the Corolla Hybrid? Or the Camry Hybrid? Or the (insert name of other Toyota) Hybrid? '
    Or a gen 3, 4, or 5 Prius? Crazy not to use the same part on at least some of these.

    Lexus CT200h would be another possibility.

    You can pull up the different cars on parts.toyota.com and compare the part numbers of their brake components.

    You can look in the New Car Features manual for each car and compare the explanations and diagrams of how the brake systems work.

    Maybe the lugnuts are the same on some of those. Probably not much else.

    Engineers get paid to completely redesign things every few years.

    How many different radiator pressure caps are out there? Gas tank caps? Heck, at work I have to deal with DOZENS of different tire valve stems - they all do the exact same thing!
