Anyone using Fumoto oil drain valve? I am thinking of putting it on my Prius Gen 3 on the next oil change. Read that there might be clearance issue. Especially when the car is already very low, might have risk of getting the plug hit going over humps.
I had one of these on my previous car (a Ford Focus), and it definitely made oil changes less messy. The downside was that it took a lot longer to drain, but the trade-off of less mess was much more of a plus for me. I obviously cannot speak on clearance issues since I do not have one on my Prius, but have definitely thought about getting one, as well.
My concern was that it allowed some volume of old oil to remain in the oil pan. I removed the valve at the end of the drain operation to allow the remaining oil to drain out. Still a lot less mess than removing a traditional drain bolt with a full oil pan. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
Have you tried pouring new oil into the engine to displace the old oil stuck at the bottom of the oil pan? This would somewhat drain a bit more of the dirty oil without removing the plug.
If you only raise the right front wheel, you'll get more oil out. And you will NEVER get ALL the oil out... Leaving 3 or 4 ounces in is NOTHING....
With oil changes. I’ve noticed since raising the front a few inches more*, then putting in the usual specd quantity, oil level on the dipstick is nearly 1/4” below top mark. Which is ok with me, since so far it never budges from there. Conclusion: I’m draining a bit more with the increased tilt. My 2 cents on the valve: I’ve never had a problem just with the drain bolt, so… * Using same jack, but run front wheels up on low-rise ramps, and added some shim to the jack cradle.
Just changed my oil on my Gen 3. Tried the fumoto drain valve on it. It does add a bit to the clearance. So I didn't installed it. I will use it on my Prius C as that car have a higher clearance.
