First Gen 5 2023 Toyota Prius cars show up at the dealers!

I think there is certainly a middle ground here. While higher profits are nice for the dealer, I am sure they are still much lower profit overall with such limited supply. I think a 2-3 month wait would the sweet spot - from a dealer’s perspective. Limited enough supply to restrict negotiation, but a steady enough stream to bring nice gross revenue and not force buyers who cannot wait to go elsewhere/resale. <90 days, I am sure most would rent a vehicle long term if needed in a pinch (if their car is written off, etc), to wait for the car they really want. Beyond that would be dicey, IMO (purely speculation on my part, assuming they are out of pocket and not from insurance, etc).

I do think it will be several years before we are back to “pick from the lot” availability.

I have had a deposit on a Prime since 9 months now (May 2022); I am just hoping one comes in this year with my name on it, but not very optimistic these days… The good news in my case is my 2014 continues to run well, so I am not in such a hurry and can wait.

I do look forward to seeing one up close and in person at the Toronto Autoshow in ~2 weeks.

 

Dealers income mostly comes from the service department. The sales department might be hurt by limited new inventory, but the manufacturers aren't going to restrict production to keep dealer profits high.

Idle factories and production lines cost a lot of money to sit unused. Is anybody permanently shutting down plants in order to lower overhead for a more limited supply?

 

Buying is still the same. It's just for products that we here at PC don't necessarily want to own. Drive by the dealership and you can find plenty of SUVs & pickups. But for the most efficient rides? Yes, it's starting to feel like socialized medicine or Russian bread lines. You can still get what you want but you have to pay at Black Market prices.

factories and workers are a good point. but that dust must have settled by now, and mfg's won't be in a hurry to reopen anything soon.
idk about japan, but surely the lack of u/s workers have all mfg's concerned about expansion

Damn, they just called me and it won't be delivered until "next week". I was told That "next week" a week ago. They said it's still in Barstow CA, are they lying?

 

If they are only telling you a week out, I would think they are giving you the best information available. If they were stringing you along, I would think they would push out more than a week, or they are setting themselves up for another headache next week… just my opinion.

I was really nervous before searching, there seem to be several dealerships listing at msrp. Hoping this will still be the case when the primes start shipping.

 

why would they be "dealer advertised prices" if they aren't? There are other ones on salespath with very marginal markups.

 

Only way to find out if dealers have the Prius at msrp is to contact them directly and see if they're playing games or wanting to make a deal. I'll find out soon b/c I need a new car soon.

Correct. There is the MSRP, plus the doc fee... other fees... then the "market value adjustment " which is a different line item. How they get away with this garbage is beyond me.
