Annoying fastener on hybrid battery filter

Honda had that style of fastener, first plastic fasteners I recall seeing, holding the plastic liners in the wheel wells one we had. I think the trick is to press very little when unscrewing, otherwise it jumps the threads, doesn't back out. A flat blade screw driver under the edge of the head, lifting a little, as you rotate the screw counterclockwise with the Phillips screw driver would help I think.

Looks like yours is a little mooshed now, maybe score a replacement.

 

As @Mendel Leisk kindly mentions, clips of this style are meant to unscrew, but not completely. In the Repair Manual (more info), Toyota writes, “Remove the clips by unscrewing the center pin and prying out the shell,” with this illustration:

If that doesn’t work, just pull out the existing clip and buy a new one, part number 90467-06165-C0, list price $1.81, shown in Figure 58-04, Mat & Carpet, part name code 58441N.

 

In the OM in section 6.3 “Do It Yourself Maintenance” on pages 546 and following there are instructions for doing this and warnings about what to do and not to do such as

“When cleaning the air intake vent
When cleaning the air intake vent, make sure to only use a vacuum to suck out dust and clogs. If a compressed air blow gun, etc. is used to blow out dust and clogs, the dust or clogs may be pushed into the air intake vent, which may affect the performance of the hybrid battery (traction battery) and cause a malfunc- tion.”

Those clips are a thorn in our sides!

I'm getting ready to make an order on McGeorge Toyota so asked them what the part number for that ridiculous clip. They said they think it's 90467-06165-C3 but in their search engine page it says it does not fit my 2021 Prius....neither does 90467-06165-C0. (But it IS that one in the diagram that you unscrew a bit before it pops out.)

You'd think an organization as big and smart as Toyota would sell a bag of the assorted clips that fit our specific vehicle....or, at least, sections of it!

But, when you can't find anything, zip ties come in all sorts of sizes but it does make us look like hack mechanics!!

 

These are available at any autoparts store, typically in packs of 5 for about 4 bucks. They're also all over ebay in bulk bags, relatively cheap. They do come in a few different sizes and lengths.

 

Yesterday, I was near my Toyota dealer so ran in and removed my clip from the rear seats' HV battery cooling fan and had the parts folks see if they had any.

After a LONG wait, they said they had one, it's called a rear seat clip but the part number is strange....90467-06153. American Toyota parts places don't list it but on Amayam it does....$1 for the clip and $19 to ship it...hehehehe My dealer charged me a buck 80.

Yes it has grooves on the part you pull out but they are not threaded, so you have to use a tiny flat-head to get it to come out a bit and then pull it about halfway out before you pull the whole clip out from the hole....VERY stupid design, IMHO.

I think the closest American part number is 90467-06151-C0

So they have two VERY sweet new rides at the dealer....a 2023 Sequoira TRD ($76K) and a 2023 bZ4X XLE ($46K). The bZ4X was very nice but I popped the hood to have a look at her innards and VERY disappointed she only has a prop bar to hold open the hood, no struts. Really? We need to pass a law that ANY vehicle costing more than $30K needs struts on the hood...mandatory!!!

 

Think I’d rather have the prop bar: simpler, cheaper, and bulletproof.
