Hey guys. Last week I got a pretty hefty size screw in Michelin defenders and got it blown out. I was on my way work and so it was a rough day. Are there good spare tires(with rim) you would recommend for the prime? I've been trying to look up the size and have been looking at eBay, fb marketplace but have been little confused right the sizes ( saw 15-17 inch tires). If you have a link or place to get it please let me know. Thanks guys.
Your owners manual* specs the the temp spare size. Sites like parts.Toyota will give you the spare rim part number. * Owners manuals in pdf format for all years can be downloaded from Toyota Tech Info site. 4th gen spare is 17”, while 3rd gen spare is 16”. And yet, both 4th and 3rd gen are the same stock 195/65R15 and rim specs. My take away from that: a 3rd gen spare will work too. The 3rd gen spare is actually closer to stock tire OD. If you’re looking to buy used rim/tire spare, keep in mind a really old spare, especially if it’s been out in the elements for some time, may be sketchy. That said, I’ve never replaced a spare myself; I figure it’s very sheltered. Underslung spares or ones that have seen frequent or protracted use might be a different story.

That sucks, the defenders are normally pretty tough, and if you have a sizable plug kit you should have been able to fix it on the road side unless you drove them for a while flat and that should get you to the tire station.

I like having a plug repair kit plus a spare, and the spare is under the hatch floor, properly stowed. Came that way, from the factory. Toyota’s short changed you guys.
My solution after a bit of research and if your prime uses 15" tires/wheels was to use a Celica alloy wheel from a salvage yard and a take off tire from my 3rd gen prius. The wheel fit perfectly since it had virtually the identical dimensions as the prime and the tire was the same size. My total investment was $25 inc balancing. I also had a blowout and while having a full size spare was satisfying the process of replacing the tire with the included mickey mouse lug nut wrench and scissor jack handle was painful and frustrating. I replaced those with a ratcheting breaker bar and sockets. My final improvement was a low end $70 battery impact wrench which removes the lug nuts and raises the scissor jack with easy. Time is safety. My hope is never to use it
Just got my spare today. Where are you guys putting yours? For now I just put it in my trunk. I'm assuming the tire doesn't fit in the under trunk due to the battery?
It needs to be tied down. If someone hits you the tire may become an unguided missile inside your car.
I put one of my snows with lugs where ever it'll fit between all the other luggage when I'm going on a trip. I give it a half hearted attempt to tie it down or jam it in between stuff and hope like hell I don't have to unpack a $$$ load of stuff, if I ever need it. Otherwise I run pure naked, no spare, no slime, no mini compressor, all of which I have, if and when I ever need them. Now that I fessed up I think I'll keep a spare on hand, at least for a while until the heat dies down and the big souper bowl celebrations fade into the history books. a 4way marked in color for both lug sizes has a permanent residence under the passenger front seat
i don't tie mine down. people fill there hatches to the roof with temporary stuff, and there's no way to tie it down. see the thread: 'what i fit in my prime'. i like the 40 lb bags of concrete
