Hi guys, i have a 2010 Gen 3 Prius that I bought at the beginning of 2021, exactly two years ago. The car had 73k miles when I bought it. It was only one owner and never used as taxi/uber. When I bought the car, I was very happy with the fuel consumption. I remember I was averaging between 55 and 65 UK mpg which I think translates to 45 to 55 US mpg. In the two years I have been driving the Prius I have used it as a personal car but also as a work car for fast-food delivery. Now the car has 110k miles and I can say that the fuel economy has drastically reduced. I am now averaging between 40 and 48 UK mpg which translates to 30 to 38 US mpg. My style of driving has not changed and I’ve always driven cautiously and preventive. In the two years I owned the car I haven’t done anything major except the periodical service done at Toyota every 7k miles. The car is not burning or losing oil. I have read many posts saying that EGR should be clean at this mileage but I am afraid to do that myself. I am afraid I might lose a nut or a bolt, I am not very handy. Also, I do not really trust mechanics too much about these specific tasks. I live in a small town and I do not have many options. I must also mention that the drop in MPG was bot sudden but rather gradual and progressive. why do you think this is happening? what do you recommend i should do? you could try cleaning the throttle body and maf. did you change tires or anything? are they properly inflated?
Tires may be under inflated or of a brand with high rolling resistance, my personal bet would be binding brakes. Most garages will look at pads and say good to go but the sliding pins on prius have a habit of sizing up with lack of use. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
I speculate it's the HVB, after what I'm going through right now. It could be livable for years. It's either live with poorer mpg or spend up to $2,500+ for new modules. I bought my 2010 with 163k USA miles in 2017. Best mpg I ever got was 42 and averaged 38 until I put on oversized AT tires where I get 30mpg pretty much.
