    Hey all,

Last night I was driving my 2010 Prius, the check hybrid system light came on, the car would no longer accelerate past like 25, and a few other dash lights came on as well. I made it home, though at one point the car stopped accelerating altogether until restart. At some point, the engine also started making an intense rattling noise. More than the usual rattle I sometimes get. It's consistent every time i turn on the car and the engine starts up.

I decided to check the oil the next morning with a cold engine and to my surprise it's EXTREMELY low, perhaps even empty (is that even possible?). I knew I needed an oil change but had no idea it had gone that low. I'm about to fill it up with oil.

Could no oil account for what's going on? And will adding oil possibly fix it or have i caused other damage. Last time car went into limp mode was 2 years ago and I got the recall service done to it which fixed the problem.

I'm trying not to drive the car at all so I bought a code reader which will get here on Sunday and I'll provide those as well.

Only maintenance I've done to the car aside from regular oil changes, pads and rotors, and the recall service is replaced the spark plugs about 5k miles ago.

Thanks so much for your help!

Thanks all. I think around 130k? Maybe up to 140k?

How would I know if it's a blown head gasket? I will say coolant is not low.

you have to do a leakdown test. might as well fill the oil, clean the egr circuit and see how it goes.

of course, you'll need to watch the oil level closely to determine what's happening

    Yes.......NO.......and yes.
One of those other lights probably was low oil pressure.
I am somewhat surprised that it didn't also say "Stop car immediately".

Oil is REALLY important. And with a vehicle that old it should be checked OFTEN.

I suggest that NOW is the time to trade it in.......before any damage that was caused gets worse.
Assuming that filling with oil gets it back to "normal" for a while.
And if it doesn't, your search for a trade should be URGENT.

P.S. Older engines use some oil; some more than others.
At this point the reason really doesn't make much difference.

I'm just wondering how much oily takes when he tops it all which I thought is what he said he was going to do. Usually when this happens to my '09 because of just having too much fun the triangle comes on problems displayed on the center display I checked the oil it's just touching the bottom of the stick I put in about 2.2 quarts done and then about 2 weeks after that it's oil change time anyway. Cheap oil cheap filter 300 plus K.

So some updates. Was able to drive the car a tiny bit and then it stopped working, check hybrid system. I tried to jump the car but it wouldn't work. Also used my portable battery. No luck. Called AAA because I needed to tow it to a parking spot. Ended up getting the battery replaced! I realized the battery was the original! And that explains a lot of my troubles...and possibly a few others I didn't know could be connected to the 12v. Now check hybrid system does NOT come on and I can drive the car. I think I've had an issue with this battery for awhile, and when I used my portable jump starter, I may have finally killed it or something? Anyway, new battery now.

HOWEVER, the knocking rattling sound, which was what immediately preceded the issue I had, is still there, though much less so, and only when the engine is revving up quite a bit more. Here is a video of that. Can anyone figure out what this is?

Also, because oil was super low, i ended up adding oil, but unfortunately I definitely overfilled it. Like, a lot more. How problematic is this?

Finally, my coolant is below the low line. I'm surprised by this since last time I checked it was fine.

Anyone have any theories about what's going on?

    Sounds like head gasket.

What’s the miles? Engine coolant level stable? Ever cleaned the EGR components and intake manifold?

Over filling worse than under filing. Maybe you're consuming it enough that it'll be gone by the time one or two starts .

about 135k miles. Have never cleaned the EGR components or intake manifold.

    How urgent is this?

Try bg hybrid repair kit. It eliminates oil consumption

If the head gasket is failing, I’d deal with that first. Diagnosis entails boroscope inspection of cylinders with cooling system pressurized, looking for coolant tests getting past the gasket into cylinder, and general condition inspection. Also leak down test is good: pressurize cylinders with special gauge set, see how it holds, and where it leaks.

Too: is engine coolant level in the reservoir holding steady? That’s a good sign.

Next priority would be cleaning EGR and intake. First cleaning should be at least by 100k, then say every 50k thereafter. Anyway, sooner the better.

Thank you. Yeah coolant is holding steady--just is low. Will top off tomorrow. Does that suggest it's not the headgasket? I'm gonna pay someone to clean egr, throttle and intake. Should i replace pcv valve?

I shoudl also note that codes say emissions test not passing: o2, evap, and egr.
    Getting the following codes:
    P0302 - Cylinder 2 - misfire detected
P0456 - EVAP system , very small leak detected
P2119 - Throttle actuator control, throttle valve - range/performance problem.

Based on your video, you have something broken in the engine. Best case might be timing chain guides, medium case would be a head gasket, causing misfires and worst case would be a bent connecting rod trying to escape from the block.

You clearly have excessive oil consumption which is a rather common problem on these engines because of flawed piston rings from the factory. That alone is reason enough to consider a new engine.

I usually don't agree with Sammy on anything and I am certainly not as paranoid as that guy, but this time I would agree the engine is about ready to cost you plenty or the car will be headed to the sslvage yard.

Given that you are in the Bay Area, I would take it to Gasket Masters and have them check it out.

Wow I wasn't expecting that. Thank you for your answer. I was hoping this was being caused by egr/intake/throttle being clogged and needing cleaning? And worst headgasket? This seems to have happened all of a sudden and I'm hoping running for a bit with very low oil didn't cause it. But it's interesting this happened together with the check hybrid system problem which completely went away when I replaced the battery.

How much would getting a new engine installed cost?

Replacing the 12v auxiliary battery probably just reset/cleared the codes, temporarily.

Sounds like you have a serious engine problem. Running with little to no oil, you're lucky your engine stayed in one piece (still may not be though) and didn't actually seize up or throw a piston rod out of the side of your engine block or crankcase.

I'd bet this engine is toast.

I don't think replacing the 12v would simply clear the check hybrid system problem. I think that issue is indeed fixed?
Just to be clear, is this knocking/rattling sound in the video I uploaded any different than the egr/intake/throttle and headgasket issues that often cause that kind of rattling?

$4k to $7k for a quality rebuilt engine or a crapshoot used replacement. No correlation with price. Depends on your shopping and you understanding different shops make your money go further. Spend a couple of hours and go where I suggested. Going to the dealer or the closest good ol' boy will cost you money or quality. It is possible to get quality at a low price.
