Changed the oil today and checked out what my magnetic oil drain plug picked up after just over 5k miles of use.

Also noticed the K&N oil filter could handle another 5k easy as it was not black.

Trying out this K&N oil now and the jug is exactly one gallon of oil so its perfect for the prius.

The magnetic drain plug did work and what it did capture looked silverish and pasty.

In the last picture to the right of the drain plug is the silver paste that the magnet captured on it. 20230106_184742.jpeg 20230106_184731.jpeg 20230106_184750.jpeg 20230106_184820.jpeg 20230106_184759.jpeg

The Prius takes 4.5 qts.... So you'll need another 1/2 quart...

4.4! But 4.5 is about the same. I would just add an oil additive like BG moa for hybrids to make it close to 4.4

That's great seems like your maintenance is through the roof cost wise seemingly we make 400k running Walmart oil and shite. I've never had an engine failure and almost 50 years until I met a Gen 3 from Virginia. It's all good though I've got friends that do the same thing and they're constantly replacing cars all the time another vehicle for whatever reason

A US gallon will be 1/2 quart short of the Owners Manual specd oil qty (at change with filter replacement), which is “ok”, especially if you’re not consuming oil.

FYI: the two marks on the dipstick are 1.5” apart, and represent a 1.5 litre spread (roughly 1.5 qt too), so adding a US gallon of oil you’ll be seeing the oil on the dipstick about 1/2” below top mark.

Don’t obsess the level right after the change; drive a few days, then check, first thing in the morning.

@Tombukt2 My favorite Walmart oil right now is Quaker State 0w20. Its less than $22 for 5 quarts. That paired with a $3.50 OEM filter is the way to go. I’ve considered the K&N filters before but it’s always like double the cost for me. K&N doesn’t manufacture or blend oil so who is that oil really from?

If you get full synthetic oil for slightly more in the 5 quart or 10 quart containers size you only have to replace your oil every 8-9K miles rather than every 4-5k miles. Non-synthetic oil breaks down and gets dirty way faster than full synthetic.

I just go by what the manual says, If it doesn't say to use synthetic I use conventional. If it recommends synthetic I use synthetic. If it says every 10,000 miles i go every 10,000 miles, unless there's an asterisk that states if I drive in a city, mountains or winter to change every 5,000 miles, and I don't drive over 100 miles a day on a flat highway in the middle of the desert, then I do it every 5,000 miles.

Anything else is second guessing the manufacturer, based on speculation and personal observations.

Quaker state is a brand of Shell. Super high quality full synthetic for a great price.

All these flashy billboard bottles have me depressed: nearby to me dealership USED to sell me Toyota bulk oil by the liter, in a bring your own bottle setup.

This worked well for 5~6 years, except that invariably took 5 minutes to get the oil, and 15 minutes to make up and print the bill.

And lately, price kept climbing, to extortionist levels, more expensive than their bottled.

And finally they said they couldn’t do it. So lately I succumbed, bought a 2-pack of Costco Kirkland 5 US quart 0W20.

So I’m once again contributing oil-soiled plastic bottles to the recycle stream.

@Mendel Leisk Have you considered the Mobil 1 0w20 12 qt box? You could probably have it special ordered to pickup at your local Walmart. FE474AAF-7A7C-4E59-86BB-6804232230A3.jpeg

Does that have some sort of plastic liner and a spout, like milk in a bag? Reduces plastic at least, but still a contaminated liner.

What I’d like to see is an efficient business selling bulk oil, bring your own bottle method. Likely starting with a sturdy/durable bottle they design: you get one by leaving a deposit with them.

addendum: review (by an apparent klutz) and some comment, at least clarifies the packaging is oil in a bag, with a spout. One of the comments shows this pitcher, which I use as well, very handy:

quaker state does not have a good record. For $2 more you can get Mobil 1, or Castrol.
The manual does say to use synthetic oil. It's hard to find regular oil anymore. I've seen it
at walfart, but the price is the same or maybe $2 less. The $5 a year you aren't spending, isn't
    worth it.

But, it's YOUR car... do what you want with it.

To clarify, this "was" my workflow. Bulk oil obtained/purchased in the red No-Spill container on left end, measured/dispensed with the pitcher, and drained oil collected with the white funnel/No-Spill container. Bring that down a trail to Mr Lube's waste oil drop-off facility, pour it out, walk home with container. No oil-soiled bottles in the process, and relatively cheap as well.

Now though, I'm back to contributing oil-soiled bottles to the recycle stream. :(

    Forgot I even posted this:

This box style has been my preference... Way less waste... Only thing better was in High School in the 80's when I worked at an auto shop and an oil truck came by regularly to fill our tank up.

It's not actually a recycling stream... That's been proven a lie ever since China stopped their recycling operation. Most plastic is treated like garbage these days: https://www.cbc.ca/documentaries/the-passionate-eye/recycling-was-a-lie-a-big-lie-to-sell-more-plastic-industry-experts-say-1.5735618

Must be a regional thing... I've never seen that one in the PNW? But I'll do my best to find it...

Less plastic, yes, but I have difficulty believing those bags inside a box can be drained as thoroughly as a typical HDPE oil bottle can with minimal effort.

That rumor is about 30 years obsolete.
