I have an 08 Prius with 260,000 that we bought for a short term need but I've been impressed with the car. It needs a few things and I'm considering dumping it since I don't need any more projects - but my wife likes it. I also just built a shop with a lift so can do the wrenching if it's worth finding the time. It's throwing a P0A80 code and P0101. I'll start by cleaning clean the MAF but can there be any other cause for the 0A80 code besides the main battery needing replacement? Do I rebuild the battery or buy ready to install? Experiences either way? What is a good parts source. Touch screen comes on but doesn't respond. I've watched vids on replacing the digitizer and they are not expensive. Where can I buy quality parts. Amazon even lists them but quality??? Speedometer screen goes out and car won't shut off etc. Professor Google says this is the combination meter. Again, what are sources for good parts? There is a slight noise that is similar to tire road noise or when a car won't shift up to a higher gear. It is speed sensitive and noticeable at higher speeds. Any ideas? I don't have any documentation of trans service. Do I even think of changing fluid at that mileage? Finally, is there a good source for the FSM ie factory service manual without subscribing to one of the professional services?
welcome! i can't answer everything but: 1) if you need a car, look around to compare prices to repairing yours. 2) 2008 prius is a beast, but you will need some major repairs like battery, brake actuator, engine if it burns oil, cat converter theft is a problem. 3) battery code can be corrosion inside, so you'll have to open it up, clean it up, then test the modules with tech stream. a new battery is best, but if you don't mind playing whack a mole, you can replace and balance modules, or buy a rebuilt, which is the same thing but someone else's labor. they are all iffy, and some have better luck than others. that is the nature of old batteries. 4) P0101 maf cleaning might help, or replacement. 5) touch screens are expensive, and good used ones hard to find. salvage or ebay 6) try texas hybrid batteries for a rebuilt combo meter swap with odo correction. 200 bucks i think. you can talk to them about the battery as well. 7) noise from tires or a bad bearing? 8) changing the oil on an ecvt is always a good idea 9) sometimes libraries have access, or there might be a gen2 on line, idk. here is the wiki page on prius manual availability: toyota-service-information-and-where-to-find-it
2: How likely is the brake actuator to go out? I haven't noticed any oil burning will run a leak down on it when I change the plugs. 3: I'll review the rebuild vids and go with rebuilding if the parts are complete and much less than paying someone else to do the labor. I mainly wanted to make sure that something else wouldn't cause the code. 5: Everything I've read says the touch screen failure is the digitizer that goes bad and replacement digitizers don't look complicated to replace. Sort of like replacing a computer screen. Why do you say go with used one? I'll probably do the 2 screens since they're inexpensive and wait on the battery until I have more information. Any idea on what else needs attention when the dash is a part? I assume the evaporator is under there and could use a cleaning. Vac lines may need changing. What else?
2) impossible to know 5) i thought they were expensive, maybe not you may want to look at all the hvac vent doors and actuators if they are accessible, and check the connections of any ecu's for corrosion
I'm tempted to fix it if I can deal with the hybrid battery. It seems new is only from a dealer and my local quoted me a price of ~$3,000 which I can't justify. The touch screen and digitizer can both be fixed for $500. I can deal with anything else mechanical like old school cars not computers. Does anyone have an idea on the battery? I want to get that solved before I start taking the dash apart. Edit: Does anyone have experience with the option at newpriusbatteries ? (I haven't been registered long enough to post a complete link.)
skip new prius batteries, and look into new lithium batteries from project lithum's nexpower. > / NPB hasn't been able to get stock for orders from 6 months ago.
I'll look into lithium but have been emailing back and forth with NPB and my understanding is that they have them in stock. They sent me a pdf with instructions and are willing to take money. Is NPB reputable?
Order new batteries and wiring kit on Alibaba for $940 plus shipping like I do Source Ni-MH 14.4V 6500mAh Hybrid Car Battery Replacement Prius Battery Cell Fit For Honda Civic on m.alibaba.com
there are several npb threads here. you would do well to read through the last few pages of each. you can find them through the profile of 2k1toaster, the owner of npb. from what i understand, they got stuck in the covid mess and couldn't get inventory from china. then one shipment was tossed overboard or something. then the owner got sick and was incommunicado. when he finally returned, it was only to say they were still waiting for product. some people paid 6 months ago, and are still waiting. i guess what bugs me is that they don't wait until shipment to charge you, they charge you when you place the order. up until that point, i wasa big proponent, and most of his customers were satisfied.
I've had mixed results from Alibaba. How many have you bought from that link and how many miles do you have on the batteries? I want it to stay fixed the 1st time.
Did anyone notice, my lips sealed in regard to Toasters Kits? On the other hand, Jacks nexpower kits with all the development youtube s, cell specs available, module tare down youtube by one of the nexpower vendors, vendors here at priuschat, at least two that post regularly and were part of the beta test team. Big Plus in my mind is Jacks DrPrius app. Several years of history from vendors and somewhere between 5 and 10 years of testing from Jack s Gen 2( please correct if I'm off to far with my estimate ) Good support from Jack his cell / module source and vendors. see where I'm going with this?

Our 2010 Canadian Touring was one of the last to avoid touch screens. I believe commencing in 2012 they all had them. I'm not sure we progress...
If you like learning and working on your car, keep the car. For reference, our 07 Prius bought new (2 miles) has 626,000 miles and counting. The major issues that I have had are as follows: 1. Head gasket needing replaced around 515K 2. Combo meter needing repaired around 550K. Received great help from Priuschat members, bisco and dolj 3. Replaced four cells in the hybrid battery around 580K. 4. Just replaced a thermocouple/thermistor in the hybrid battery probably due to my "rough" handling. Our plan is to drive it till the wheels fall off. I say keep it. Next on the list is to replace muffler and gasket as it is much louder than stock and I have been neglecting it.
I ended up installing a lithium pack from Nexcell and sending the gauge cluster and MFD off for repair. All are back together and working fine. Does anyone have current information on the bast place to sell the battery cores?
There is a Hybrid battery place up in Seattle that buys old batteries. I'll look for a link. hybridrestoration.com in Memphis TN which is your state. Give them a call.
I followed the link but it seems to be for a civic. I found the gen 2 prius but looks like you order them buy to piece. I assume you need 14?
