Ghosts??

Do you seriously believe in ghosts? My theroy is that your machine was faulty or some way the sensor registered a press on the button from a manufacturing defect.

P.S. Was anyone else in the Prius when this happened? Look again if the radio just turns on at about 6:15. Maybe if it does you can bring it to your dealer and ask them to check it out but they probably wouldnt want to do that because they probably do no have the time.

Radio cutting on and off was part of my MFD failure. As I drove around, sometimes both the radio and the MFD would die, then both would come back, then mostly the MFD would die again.

Maybe this doesn't apply to you, but now you know...

My wife drives our Prius to work and she reported that once, while playing an MP3 CD, there was a loud blip through the speakers and the music stopped. When she pressed the Audio button to see what's going on, the first odd thing was that she heard a beep on the button press (we have it set to OFF). She found that all the FM presets were erased and the system beep had turned back on. As far as we could tell, the Audio portion of the MFD had effectively reverted to factory settings. None of the other screens were affected (Consumption did not reset, etc). Here's hoping that it was a one time freak occurrence and not a symptom of a larger MFD problem.

Well, the audio is physically separate from the MFD - the part with the knobs, CD slot, etc is a different box from the display. I'm not positive where the settings are stored, but i believe the radio presets and a few other things (like that beep) are stored in the radio, not the MFD. it's possible there's a loose wire that goes into the MFD and she hit a bump or something that happened to jiggle it just right to cut power to the radio for a second - thus erasing the presets.

 

So sorry, I was playing with my inter-dimensional Prius time portal and I think it may have turned on your radio by accident..

If it happens again take apart you dash and check all the connectors. This is easer then it sounds.

 

Those 04 models are known for AFD troubles. It is pretty expensive so I bet you'll opt to the possibility of gremlins in the car instead.

 

It's gotta be ghosts related to the Prius. If you re-arrange the word Prius you get Supir which stands fora communications system and broadcast IR network link . It's all in the letters. (Bart-Massey.com)

OK, I retract this statement. Although I suppose I can't be sure I didn't hit the button by accident, the radio came on automatically for me too today on my way to lunch. Definitely odd.

There's always a chance that a previous one-time freeze-up of the radio controls was the beginning of the MFD failure, but until the display actually failed to show anything there were no real signs of trouble with it.

As long as you have a display that toggles between Energy and Consumption just by pressing the Info button on the steering wheel, you're OK since that's the 'replacement' unit that should not up and die. Anything else, and just keep your fingers crossed...
