2023 Prius Product Information

I guess, have to wait a bit longer to get information on the Gen5 Prius Prime.

 

The US is only getting the 2.0L engine?

 

So no 120V 1500W power outlet on the Prius? Perhaps only the Prime?

And wow, the higher grades take a big hit on mpg. (Extra weight? Extra height from bigger rims?)

The way this is presented, seems they're not to proud of it? At first glance a bit of a head-scratcher, that (as usual) only the base level has a spare. When you look at the vehicle weights you see their logic, though it seems short-sighted to me:



LE is a bit of a stripper though, short list of deletes I care about:

No Smart Key (borderline deal breaker)
No Auto-dimming rearview mirror with Homelink (I'd miss this)
No Softex upholstery or steering wheel (a plus in my estimation)

How did it gain so much weight while adding almost nothing of value?

Current eco is 3010 and xle at 3075
the le is at 3097 and xle at 3164

the limited awd weighs almost as much as an m3 e46. But that's old performance engineering

 

Ok, so the ground clearance didn't shrink, that's good.

The cargo space did. I can barely get 2 28 inch suitcases into my 2016 2 Eco. Has anyone tried to put suitcases in the 2023 hatch?

I'm on the fence. I've had 3 Priuses, and I'm ready to replace my 2010. I'm really tempted by the Kia Sportage Hybrid and the Rav4 Hybrid, but wait times are long (I'm guessing the Prius will be the same). Decisions decisions.

 

Beefed up suspension, steering and brakes to accommodate the extra horsepower?

I think the bigger tires. They add a lot of weight, perhaps. Plus, they raise the car up higher, and lower the mpg.

 

Anyone have any idea when the new Prius will start shipping to dealership’s?

 

The added height apparently has little to do with mpg (to an extent) from what I’ve researched here. Are the tires any wider? If so that has major impact.

side note: does anyone know how the cubic feet of space compare for the trunk or rear area? I really want the 2023 Prius to be a great car for making into a camper..no back seats with a bed platform. But sadly, the gen 3 looks like it will have more cubic feet of space.

Sounded like the inverter was only on the Prime from earlier release. Power out systems were only available for the plug in on past Japanese models.

The MPG difference is mostly from the weight difference between the wheels. The larger wheels add weight to the worse place on the car for efficiency and performance.

In addition to the braking and suspension, there is weight from the bigger wheels, and bigger engine. Isn't the 2023 also a little bigger overall?

Frontal area is an important metric for aerodynamics. Motorcycles have a worse cD than semi trucks, but their tiny frontal area compensates for it. Lowering a car will help with aerodynamics. Aero just doesn't have a big impact if all the driving is low speed.

The tires are both 195mm wide. Wheel weight alone is enough to explain the difference. It is in line with the difference people that switched wheels have seen, and the difference between the Camry hybrid LE and higher trims.

Took a moment to spot the headlight difference. The LE being auto off likely means the light sensor for auto on is deleted.

 

This video from Toyota USA clearly shows the 120V 1500W power port at 6:00 in the video, but not a word is said about it, nor which build levels will get it:

Toyota also has this video for the Prime, which shows the 120V 1500W power port at 3:48. Also no mention about it.

 

The 2010 Gen 3 is rated at 51/48 with a combined of 50. So I'm not very impressed with the 2023 mpg for the higher grades. And the Prime will get...?

 

I haven't seen any mention of the video recorder feature in the PDF or any of the reviews. I wonder if support was quietly dropped.

 

Those videos were very likely pre-production units. What features they have may not make it to production.

Toyota and others have been deleting some features due to parts shortages. An inverter could have been intended to be available, but it isn't something Toyota is going to delay the launch for if parts are scarce.

 

Same. Decades of R&D and this is what they make? Maybe less advertising spend is needed lol.

at first I liked how it looked because it was different. Then I realized no it’s not they’re just copying designs from other cars..this thing looks like a $25k Chevy in the front and a dodge in the back lol.

Why am I so interested in the 120V 1500W inverter, which shows up in various videos, but goes unmentioned by the commentators (including Toyota)?

Well, camping, for one. Rice cooker, small microwave, etc.

And... this morning at 4:20 AM, due to heavy, wet snow, a huge pair of branches fell from our white pine directly onto our power lines and ripped them right off the house! We were without power for nearly ten hours. During the power outage, I ran our freezer, router, internet, phones, security system, and computers off of a 1kW inverter in my Prius. So having a Prius with a 1500W inverter system would be a nice option. Hopefully all those videos that show this 120V power port in the back next to the USB ports isn't just marketing stick-on labels! There's even a picture of a special window insert which allows the power cord to run out the window without letting the rain in.

It's in the videos. But I've seen no mention of it in materials nor heard anyone in the videos mention it. So???
