anyone ever had a AAA person install a new battery?

    It's a pretty easy installation, but if you prefer AAA to do it I'm sure they can do it correctly.

    Take in mind, when you change out the battery you will reset all the car's systems, which is a good thing to do once in a while. But you will probably need to readjust personal settings such as your programmed radio station settings.

    No big deal.

    There's a way to avoid memory loss, basically supplying alternate electrical source during the battery swap. But that's another degree of complexity, and restoring settings is no big deal.

    OK, so it's now been over a week. Place I was going to go (not the Autozone but a Japanese auto repair) now just had me send pic of the battery . . I called another Japanese auto repair and they have a Factory Motor Parts battery w a 5 yr warranty. But they can't install until next week. . so that's probably out but the 5 yr warranty sounds good and they don't charge extra for install $290+ tax.

    Hi; anyone know anything re a Factory Motor Parts battery? Per above. Japanese auto place just a second ago said they can't get a battery. This is unbelievable.Thanks

      so many of you have been so great re my previous thread on battery replacement. When I mentioned the screen going blank issue to the most recent Japanese auto, they said there might be a problem with the multimedia screen.
      Just wondering whether anyone else has had this problem when a battery gives up ghost.
      The last time battery failed I had a hard time starting the car.
      This time I still don't know whether battery has "failed" per se because I still haven't had AAA come out and check as I don't know yet where it's being towed to fix.
      But am assuming that because of this problem w/screen going blank after car is stopped but key still in ignition (for instance, if heat on or listening to a c.d. for a few minutes before go into store) -- that that's an early indication of battery failure.
      Precipitating incident was my leaving map light on in the car, then car wouldn't start. (However, even after that the map lights would still come on until with snow I couldn't quite shut door and that totally drained).
      Am hoping that the screen going blank (again, this is after 1-2 minutes of car stopping but key still in ignition, listening to a c.d.) is a battery issue only.
      Has anyone else ever had this happen w/screen? (the main screen with the mileage, etc.)

    looks like a wholesaler to repair shops. fvp battery probably made by one of the large battery manufacturers. there's only a few from what i've read.

    thanks, ok so now had to alter AAA call - thought they would have a way to test battery as well as tow but apparently one or other. so they're sending out a person who can test to see whether it's battery or alternator. I am still unclear on whether battery will test ok if it is totally drained - or whether it has to be driven around 45 mins 1st. guy at repair shop suggested jumping and driving around 45 mins.
    But even if I do this -- on Thanksgiving I drove 45 mins 1 way, then back, and still having the problem w screen going blank when turn car off and listening to c.d. for few mins. leading me to believe it's either a bad battery or something other than battery.
    really frustrating.
    if car does jump still don't know whether it's going to die at a stop light if I try to drive it in to place having it fixed. .

    idk much about gen 1. in gen 2 and later, there is no alternator. and when you jump the car, if it starts, it won't die until you shut it off

    I had AAA sell/install the 12V battery in my Gen III three years ago. The original battery died at work after dome light was left on, but OEM battery was already 5 years old. Called AAA for jump start, but due to battery age, need for reliable battery, and a hectic schedule, I let them sell me a new one to get it done with (i.e., when you call for a jump start, they come out with a AAA-branded battery for your car in case you want it or old one won't take the jump.) The guy installed it fast, and it's been fine ever since. (Had a warranty, too, though I haven't needed it.) It (the battery) also turned out to be cheaper than whatever the dealer would have charged. I'm sure there are plenty of cheaper options, but it wasn't a complete rip off, and it was certainly convenient.

    It sounds like OP's situation is more complicated, and they bought their battery elsewhere. But re: the title of the thread: The AAA guy I had was unfazed by the task of installing a 12V battery in a Prius.

    You can not really do a good test unless the battery is fully charged, and given the history of this battery being severely discharged for a long time, I doubt you will get much of a charge in the battery.
    If your battery is fully discharged, which it sounds like it is, it will take more like 18 hours of driving around (although, you don't need to drive it around, just have it in READY) to fully charge it. As I said above I have my doubts about whether this battery will take a full charge.

    Hi thanks for all info. AAA (at least here in NW) won't install 12 v on '01 prius.
    But this is all good to know!
    OK, so got AAA to come out - had to ensure it was a battery tester who cd also test alternator.
    Battery had been drained by map light but also door was left partly open w snow after.
    So cold cranking amps on Panasonic D-23 battery per label on battery are 355. AAA looked up in system and said for prius CCA are 270.
    When AAA jumped went from 0-226 in about 10 mins. he thought that was good. I idled car in driveway for another 1.5 hrs.This was last night.
    When I went out to start today it started.I have to drive soon.
    AAA guy said alternator volt meter was 13.92. He also said that good, means no problem w/alternator.
    So I'm hoping battery ok; just got drained.
    He said that when I come to a stop at a store and I'm still listening to c.d. that it's in accessory mode and that maybe battery trying to preserve life by turning off screen.
    But this never used t happen

    good idea, Bisco. Drove fine tonight (about 1/2 hr ea way). On way back I turned on heat and also c.d. Still fine.

    Think should get charging amps tested when time. thanks. If the battery does kaput think I will go w/the Factory Motor Parts battery w/5 yr warranty bc the Japan auto place that offers it installs it w/o extra charge. The dlr also offers a Panasonic - like the one 1 Have - but w/only a 2 yr warranty. It's weird bc their Toyota True Type battery has a 5 yr warranty but is not supposed to be as good as Panasonic.

    true start has two full years, plus 6 pro rata, at least for other generations
