While it’ll take a a few years, looks like 2027 will see the breakthrough in efficiency and battery technology for Toyota (and 3rd generation e-axle)

We’ll see some improvements as early as 2025 though with the 2nd generation e-axle.

I look forward to seeing Toyota apply their engineering talent to EVs.

In the 2005-2016, the EPA and associated science and technology departments would do detailed technical analysis of hybrids, BEV, and alternative fuel vehicles. Sad to say, in 2017 a new administration killed these efforts and closed down the labs.

So, does this bring them up to Tesla or Lucid?

Lol... Toyota is so bipolar... Or maybe it's multiple personality disorder? Or maybe substance abuse? On the one hand they're the best friend of fossil fool industry compared to all other car makers. On the other hand, once they get drunk late at night, they're suddenly the greatest innovator of the electric car technology ever...

I remember back before the 2008 financial crisis after oil peaked at over $150 a barrel. There were plenty of car makers that were just as stupid as Toyota currently is. Of course back then in the golden age of hybrid cars Toyota was in the exact opposite of the position for success than they are today.

It's almost as if China has engineered a hostile take over of Toyota and they're enjoying all the electric cars they forced them to make in their country exclusively while at the same time China is destroying their success in all the other countries so they take over for cheap once they go broke.

How long ago was that position held by VW? A year? Two? GM was also once in that spot.

For the headline, being profitable is easy if you can sell old technology from amortized lines for current market prices. No fault in Toyota for squeezing the most profit out of an investment. The downside is in their unwillingness or inability for rapid change that leaves them vulnerable to major shifts in the market. Which is why they are undergoing a major reassessment of their EV plans now.

Toyota once again tops the list of most admired Auto Companies.

Top 100 most admired companies in the world 2022 - Victor Mochere

Only bringing this up to get people to think - with all the negative comments and views on Toyota here, how could this company possibly be the Most Profitable and the Most Admired Auto Company in the world- Is everyone else wrong or is there a definite anti Toyota bias at play here from some individuals.

Maybe the rest of the world thinks Toyota is a pretty good company making pretty good products - not an evil empire at all.

Is Toyota perfect- of course not
Is Toyota a company to be despised - of course not

Is Toyota a good, profitable and admired company worldwide as well as a positive contributor to society - probably.

Since most car forum are for enthusiasts and Toyota typically isn’t a car company for enthusiasts (in recent times), you can probably put two and two together.

How do you define "most profitable?"
    - the most total profits in dollars (yen)?
    - the most profit per car sold?
    - the highest profit margin, in percentage?
    - the highest revenue?

The previous link was highest revenue. Not sure were it got the figures from. Tesla's 2021 revenue was $44billion from other sources, and this reports $39b. Ahah, last line of the article says 2019 figures for Toyota. Guess the rest are of similar vintage. VW goes to near $234b here from $80b in the other. That's about $5b less revenue than Toyota, but they had near $4b more profit. https://www.factorywarrantylist.com/car-sales-by-revenue.html
Some of the companies in the chart are linked to specific data

When I hear “most profitable car manufacturer” I think that means the manufacturer that makes the most profit per year.
Revenue is great, but to accountants, bankers, the IRS, investors and most lay people, Profit means money left after expenses.

I can see how it can get confusing when discussing revenue and profit- Here a respected publication goes thru the whole scenario

The Numbers Tell the Story: Who’s the Best Car Company in the World? | WardsAuto

Here are a few quotes keep in mind the data is for previous year as 2022 data is not complete yet

"Toyota tops the list of who makes the most cars. It’s Number One in the world. It sold nearly 10.5 million vehicles in 2021, more than anyone else."

"Whereas Toyota is Number One in the world when you look at sales, when measured by revenue ($253 billion) it drops to Number Two. And Volkswagen ($276 billion), which was in second place, steps up to Number One."

"Mercedes-Benz was the most profitable car company last year, putting nearly $26 billion on the bottom line. But last year Mercedes spun off its heavy-truck business and booked that as a $12.3 billion profit. That’s a one-time windfall event that’s not going to happen again. So, if you strip that out Mercedes would move down to sixth place.

Ranking second is Toyota, with tidy net profit of more than $19 billion"

'Mercedes made the most profit per unit: $5,909 on average for every vehicle it sold. And that includes stripping out that big profit it made by selling off its heavy-truck business.

But look at who’s in second place on a profit-per-unit basis – Tesla, at $5,895. BMW is third at $5,447.

Then comes the first of the full-line, mass-market companies. Ford, at $2,463, is in fourth place, and that, too, includes stripping out that big one-time profit from the Rivian stock. Stellantis, at $2,372, is not too far behind Ford.

Then we come to VW ($1,914) and Toyota ($1,839) who are quite close to each other in the sixth and seventh spots. What I find so interesting is that this is an industry where manufacturing scale is supposed to lead to the lowest costs and the highest profits."
