Rear brake pads were pretty much shot after 120,000 miles.

When will it need new brakes? Nowhere close at 50,600 miles.

I bought this V used at 55k.. they put new brakes on it..
@120k, I've replaced all the brakes twice and (now) front calipers since I bought it. So, it's had 3 sets of brakes.. I attribute the lack of longevity to the Cleveland Ohio winters here.. I'm thinking I'll need to have them serviced each spring to clean them up from all the winter road salt. My wife's 2011 liftback has 80k miles and still original brakes.. the difference... we don't drive hers in the winter.

I sold my 2002 gen 1 Prius with 175,000 miles on it. My mechanic refused to replace the pads since they were no where near wearing out.

My wife's 2010 Camry hybrid is in a similar condition. Around 183,000 miles and the brakes are still fine.

Both of us spent a large part of our time on the freeway. You'd think that an hour or two a day in stop and go commute traffic ** would be hard on the brakes, but it wasn't.

** Half of my drive time was spent in Silicon Valley commute traffic, including stop and go on steep foothill grades. About 1/5th of her drive time was spent in stop and go traffic in Los Angeles and San Diego.

200k. I couldn't wear them out sooner if I tried. I really beat the daylights out of this car with completely wide open throttle and pounding the brakes as hard as I can. And still I can't get the brakes to wear out any sooner. I pull trailers regularly and use the car harder than anybody else. My fuel economy is 26 miles per gallon. If brakes were installed on a car at 55,000 mi I have to very strongly suspect It was just a shop looking to make money off someone. First of all I can almost certainly guarantee you used aftermarket junk from China which won't last so you'll be doing the brakes again in another 55,000 mi. The car probably didn't need them for 200,000 mi or more if it was never touched in the first place. How sad

Like realtors say: “location, location, location”?

And do the 30k mile or 3 year inspection.

BTW: 95k kms here, fronts and rears are around 6mm remaining.

I had to do rear pads at 98k. Fronts were in great shape but did lube the pins. Have only put about 6k on since then.

Okay, so I just have ALL new brakes (again) new Calipers on the front of my V.. they ordered some kit for the rear.. I think for the parking brake setup.. (I never use the parking brake on either Prius..

I washed the car 2 days ago and put it in the garage.. (bad I know, as I should drive it a little first)
but I go to back out today and I heard the rears brake loose from the rotors.. I tried not to get them too wet, but it still did this.

I have the OEM 16" rims, but have the center caps on it. (thus no Hub Cap) I wonder if the hub caps would help keep the water off them when I wash the car.. Ideally, I thought it would be better in the winter to help keep from getting the rims all salted and not able to easily wash the salt off.. (I figured it'd be trapped behind the wheel covers)

I'm just surprise they get stuck so easily after a car wash.. I don't notice this nearly as much with my wife's liftback, but she has the wheel covers on hers.. and her brakes are still original at 82K... and no issues.

Thoughts on the wheel covers? (I'd think the V's with the 17" wheels would be no different than mine without the covers.

It's normal for rotors to get a little surface rust. Washing, then letting it sit for a few days, this is bound to happen, with/without covers. No big deal.

Hubcaps hold rock salt which destroys the finish on the rims and carrots deep underneath the paint. The rims will bubble up.

Thank you Mendel... I was kinda thinking it wouldn't matter much either way.. especially in the rust belt and all the winter road salt.

Thank you for your note.. and yea, that was the reason I took the wheel covers off to begin with.. unfortunately, the finish on the rims was already beginning to be compromised.. and it's only worsened since I've owned the car.. eventually, I'll look to either replace or refinish the wheels.. or just put the covers back on to cover them up.. for now, they still look fairly decent..

It can happen early. My mom was a decent driver just used both feet. This was 2 years ago now and @ about 30 - 32 k mi (Downloaded from a thread where I was repairing a caster issue). tapatalk_1050230728.jpg

That’s 2-3 mm pad thickness, at 30k mi. (The backing plate is thicker than the remaining pad).
