Hello, Gen 2 Prius HID headlight bulb burnt out so replaced both sides with Phillips DR2 C1’s. After that daunting task I turned on headlights only to find that the high beams came on. When I pulled high beam lever back just got a flicker and very little change. How is this possible??? Before change working side performed as it was designed to. Is it possible that I screwed up the reattachment of power cables on both sides? I found them very difficult to twist back on. Did a relay blow?
    Please help!!!

Make sure that you understand how these lights work. On normal incandescent - halogen bulbs, the high and low beams use distinct separate filaments on a single bulb design (other cars have multiple bulbs). Either design is easy to see the difference from low to high.

The HID system on a Gen2 Prius is different. It only has a single bulb per side, and it is either on or off. "High or low" beam it not accomplished by changing the intensity of the light source. Instead the HID system uses a mechanical "eyebrow" shutter to block some of the light in low. Switch to high and the shutter raises to allow more light out.

Putting new bulbs in might have made your lights a bit brighter, and changed how noticeable the low/high shift is. If you see any change at the "top" of the beam, then the shutters should be working.

If not then I would indeed check the connections for dirt or bent pins.

Just a thought, might not help - but I always switch these out with plug and play LED replacements (no wire splicing). Takes about 20 minutes (with practice of course more like an hour or two first time) to loosen bumper and take headlights off which makes the job go much smoother. I switch to LED because for $60 you don't need to worry about the ballast and so it's much cheaper than the HIDs.

Thanks for your replies. I do understand the HID function. I believe that the high beam shutter is always open on the car now, even without the high beams turned on. Again how is this possible, it’s on both sides. Could I have connected the power cables in a reversed position? I’ll check low beam fuses but unlikely they both blew while installing bulbs.
    Confused and frustrated…
    Thank you!

Any more help out there? Is it possible that both bulbs are bad?
    Thanks again!

HID bulbs either light up and work, or they don't.

Do you hear a slight "thump" from the lights when you switch low-high beam and back? Remember, when the headlights are ON, then the HID bulbs are ON - the same in low and high. Switching to high should supply power to the shutter solenoid. Switch back to low removes power from the solenoids.

ANY chance that the bulbs are not fully seated in the lens housings? If the bulb is out of position, all bets are off as to where the light ends up.

Do you have a copy of the service manual and wiring diagram for your car?

I suspect the headlight switch stalk has gone bad. One item failure, causes both sides issue, vs both sides (2 item failure) simultaneously failing…
