Massive Oil leak, broken oil filter housing base. Wear and tear or shop error?

Just wanted to ask the OP if they heard any air tools at the oil change place?

It is a stretch, but a 30 min place could be treating it like a pit stop and used a oil filter cup/socket tool and tightened by mistake with an air impact wrench. There could be obvious damage to the surface the filter seal against, or to the threads, that isn't seen until you remove the filter.

You could sneak back and listen/observe their work to see if they are sloppy and obviously inexperienced. 30 minute oil change guys can make tow truck drivers look knowledgeable.

Ha ha, at least it might get you more leverage with the manager or corporate if they were doing something weird. One of my friends first jobs was at a Jiffy Lube and I am sure he overfilled engines, stripped some drain plugs, and did some damage. Imagine a kid in a hurry hammering the air wrench wondering why it won't come off until it collapses the filter and maybe cracks the housing, then he finally realizes he was tightening and backs it off and puts new filter on. But yeah, no, probably not. Could just be a spontaneous crack.

All shops over tighten. The misperceive the sealing surface. It's an o ring inside a bore. Don't even need to bottom the cup. Jiffy lube uses paraffin that looks like oil. If you like your engine you won't go there. They destroy pentastar oil cooler assy's the same way, crank down on cap
