You working on a Gen 3 doing the head gasket just buy the engine set because more than likely something's going to fail and you're going to have to take it all apart believe it or not you'll be able to reuse your head gasket because it won't have any miles on it seriously and then you can fiddle fart around with the bottom end until you figure out that's not the thing to be doing but at least you'll have the gaskets on hand and if you're lucky or rod hasn't broken your girdle still intact.
Which is better? The one that doesn't go bad routinely. Have you considered the FlePro version of the head gasket? How many chances do you give toyota to get it right? What is that mobile head gasket repair service using when they do a parking lot replacement?

Not sure which way to go on this one - a good question to consider. The advice of the local CARspec shop is to only use the Toyota head gasket. (shop specializes in Toytota's/done a lot of Prii head gaskets) They also advised that Toyota does not recommend resurfacing the cylinder head. Additionally, they said, the timing chain (almost always) does not need to be replaced. Additionally, I have 2 sets of EGR cooler+EGR tube+Intake Manifold, so I swap them out every 2 yrs/40k (so build up should be manageable (I hope, ha ha!)).
Gasket Masters used a Felpro head gasket in all the videos I’ve watched. Reused everything else AFAIK.

Have you spell pro PT gasket since they're inception and I've always loved them very much even when they made the copper shims for the overhead valve engines yada yada great outfit good r&d and in the game for life still using I have a PT gasket for the two z I just haven't used it
I'd be inclined to replace them, just "better safe than sorry". Spec's for checking the existing ones in one of the pdf's in first head gasket link in my signature.
Yeah I found them online a couple places for like $17 a set or something looks like they're made properly and all that I didn't get to use them obviously but here they sit they haven't rusted and what not sitting out so that's kind of a good sign and I guess like they started in the late '80s there a stretch once type things I've reused them before they say it's not good idea but when they cost $109 a set a lot got reused
It would be BEST to replace the head bolts. They "may" be within specks, but they don't cost much more, and less chance of any of them failing. You should get the engine gasket kit. It includes all the gaskets for the engine, including head gasket. Toyota updated the head gasket, it's the best one for the car. The timing chain should be fine. Depending on how much they machine the head, it will raise the compression. And get the valve close to the pistons. Unless, you get the correct head gasket. They make specialized gaskets with an extra plate in it, that makes it thicker to make up for the material removed from the head. If it's not warped, you're fine. Replace the valve guide seals while you have the head off. Very easy to do

This is in your opinion, correct? I have a courier friend with multiple Gen 3 Prii. Some with really high miles! He's running a FelPro head gasket on his latest head gasket replacement. He's had many. Work was performed at a professional shop. Only time, and miles, will tell if it lasts longer that the stock one, correct? Maybe Gasket Masters, that mobile Gen3 head gasket replacement service, can shed some light and data on this subject. They use the real improved head gasket in their service. (imho.... ) Who knows if it really is improved? Only time will tell.
Exactly. "Everybody has an opinion", as they say.... I like data! And record keeping. And the record for the stock head gasket is,,,, BAD. Is there another car engine out there with this chronic problem?
