That depends on the serving utility. I had one site that had to do exactly that: if external power was lost while the cogeneration plant was paralleled with the grid, the protective relaying was required to cause an immediate unit trip, but we could then line up for island mode and restart. Restoration required the same thing in reverse—apparently a synchroscope and a steely eye weren’t good enough.

    That is the reason.

And if you have one, you're allowed to do what you said.

Right - and no rule requires you to kill the generating capability when you have a switch that isolates you from the grid.

That's correct. That's the difference between a "grid following" inverter and a "grid forming" inverter.

All the fire reports I've seen center on Teslas. Are they just picking on Tesla, as usual, or have there been reports on other manufacturers EVs going up?

    Are there any other EVs?

With roughly 2/3 of the EV market and the compliance and competition numbers in the weeds, Tesla remains the well recognized name. Like getting a Dr Pepper from the Coke machine.

I'm sorry, the term "grid forming" just makes me want to see little wires and towers and substations sprouting out the back of it, dripping with slime.

Only two EV makers met the threshold to end their models EV tax credit. One was Tesla and the other is replacing all their earlier, defective traction batteries that did not require a salt water bath to burst in flames.

Regardless, I don’t drink RC cola or Sunburst. Having non-Tesla EVs does not mean they are affordable or even as available as a Tesla. Still, I approve the experiments of others … even if I have no interest in confirming their results.

There's only one EV available in the US that's less desirable than any Tesla to me - the Smart EV.

    Leaf is more affordable.
Bolt is more affordable and more desirable.
ID.4 is more affordable and more useful.
Ionic 5 and EV6 are better, more affordable and more useful.
    Etc.

The 3 and Y are ugly as hell up front.

Everything is better built than Tesla.
Everything is better supported than Tesla.
Tesla has lost its charging advantage - there are now more non-Tesla fast chargers more widely available than there are superchargers.

Tesla's are "S3XY". I have no interest in whatever that means in a car.
Tesla's are fast. I out-grew my need for my car to provide a thrill ride experience a quarter century ago.

& it's air-cooled battery loses capacity in record time - go for it
forgot to say, more desirable to meeee
.... again, "to meeeee" (tho it's much less efficient)
Ionic 5 and EV6 are better, more affordable and more useful.
Etc. [/QUOTE] so go buy one. It's the beauty of having so many choices
Yeah that's what I want. Pull up to a standalone or maybe if you're lucky a rarer location of 2 or 3 quick chargers - where the only one that works is occupied. And if/when it's not occupied - it may be likely one of the majority 50 KW max power - never mind the much higher cost to use rates. If you were an owner, that would already be in your massively superior to everyone elses' knowledge base.

Thought about it. Don't need to since I already have a better car.

I've been to many, some with cars charging at them, some sitting and saying they were ready. Haven't found one that was down yet.

Did see a supercharger that was down though. Power was out, though it was on at the hotel next door.

Which is irrelevant to today's lithium batteries.

My 2017 Prime did not have a CCS-1 port, just J1772 only. Worse, the 3.6 kW charge rate was too slow for my trips. But if you want to see broken J1772 chargers, visit Tennessee.

Your model 3 can't charge at 5,000kW at almost any street corner, and it can't go over 600 miles when away from civilization. My car can. Your Model 3 doesn't average 6.3 miles/kWh in warm weather. My car does.

Better stop solid state battery development then.
If you are getting that efficiency in a Prius Prime under those conditions, the odds are greatly in your favor of doing so with a Model 3.

6.3 mi/kWh is 40 miles on a charge—yes but not unless you cruise ~ 30 mph and accelerate and brake gently. You can obtain ~ 7.0 mi/kWh with ~ 25-mph cruising.

That's my average, about half and half highway and city.

That’s similar to my volt in the summer, my max is about 72 miles on a charge if I leave hvac off and take strictly back roads.

Gotta be 85F+ to pull it off and no hvac
