cigarette/power outlet fuse problems??

    The fuses in the cig. lighter and power outlet fail while trying to charge my cell phone. I have replaced both 15a fuses twice and have tested the phone charger in my wifes car and it works fine. Why are both fuses failing. Any help?

    A few questions for you to consider:

    Do the 15A fuses blow as soon as you install them, or only after you've tried to plug in the phone charger?

    Examine the auxiliary power socket holes. Any metal debris within, shorting out the contacts?

    If you plug another 12V accessory into the power outlet socket, can you get it to work?

    The fuses did not blow until shortly after connecting the phone charger. The socket holes seem clean, but I will wipe them out. I have not yet tried to attatch another accessory, although that seems like the next logical step. Thank you for the suggestion. I will try it when I buy more fuses.

    Just bought a 2006, the power outlet below the radio doesn't have power. Having trouble locating a blown fuse, does anyone know which fuse it is? All other interior acc/lights work.

    You need to get under the instrument panel on the driver's side and find the fuse box there. Once you find the fuse box, there are two 15A fuses to examine: PWR OUTLET FR and PWR OUTLET.

    Should you find that you need to replace one or both fuses, take the blown one with you when shopping, because you will find the fuses are a very small physical size that you may need to source from your local Toyota dealer's parts dept. Your discount auto parts store may not carry that size.

    Thank you. I had found the fuse box under the hood but hadn't located the one under the dash.

    Hi Patrick, both of mine not working.
    In my 04, the manual and cover shows fuse#12. and its a white mini 25a. meter tested fuse ok.
    ill look at other numbers, but if fuses ok, then is there another fuse, or just outlet.. yes we tested other plug ins... nothing works, i dont use console power but it went at same time...

    update. just found this from hobbit and will check it...

    The layout for all this is just ... bizarre. According to the EWD,
    the +12 rail from the 100A DC/DC converter fuse splits thusly:
    .
    .. 15A "pwr outlet FR" --> power outlet relay --> power outlet #1 (dash)
    .
    .. 25A "ACC B" --> ACC relay contacts --> 15A "pwr outlet" --> power
    .. outlet 2 (armrest)
    .
    The latter also powers the power outlet relay coil downstream from
    the 15A "pwr outlet" fuse, so if you lose that fuse then it looks
    like both outlets go dead.
    .
    Like I said, it's completely braindead. One comes right off the ACC
    relay, the other gets its own relay and bypasses the ACC line...
    .
    For reference, the Coastal mod essentially connects a wire across
    the power outlet relay contacts, leaving the dash outlet enabled.

    Pace hobbit, braindead might be in the eye of the beholder. If they started with a system with a single power outlet, with its 15 amp supply taken out of the 25 amp ACC budget, and then they wanted to add a second power outlet, making that a second independent circuit with a relay is sensible.

    I mean, they could have added it as a second branch below the ACC fuse, but then they would have had to up the ACC fuse to 40 amps, and upsize all the wiring in the ACC circuit to match. Nobody would have gone for that.

    Or, they could have made both power outlets supplied independently, not just the second one, and downsized the ACC fuse to 10 amps for supplying only the other ACC stuff. But then they'd have needed one more relay.

    my 04 manual after noting on chat there are 3 fuses for power... mine has #12 as 25a, and that was ok.
    and #23, 15a and #29 pwr front, 15a.. both blown... replaced and all good to go.
    No wonder 4 spare set under hood had two 15a, ha!

    Not I, but you might see chapman and hobbit response above. One says somehow the wires are connected.
    funny thing, i just plugged in another devise in front dash, and it got stuck, and now the front doesnt work but console works... so far...
    so, ??? cv

    Well, they're "connected" in the sense that the power to one of them also activates the relay that powers the other one. That doesn't explain both fuses blowing though.

    I didn't see it happen, but my first guess at the story would be that somebody plugged a thing into one of them that blew the fuse, and then thought "weird, why doesn't that work?" and plugged it into the other.

    What do you mean by 'stuck'? Have you rechecked fuse #29?
