I am getting close to 300k miles on my 2012 plug in. I am noticing a hum from the back end. It is weird, if I am on the interstate going straight or slight right turn I hear the hum.....if I have even the slightest left turn the hum goes away. Does this sound like rear wheel bearings? Thanks
Wouldn't surprise me. You could check if the hum goes exactly with wheel speed. If you drive at 30 and then at 40, and that makes the hum sound like the first two notes of "here comes the bride", and you drive at 30 and then at 45, and that makes it sound like the first and second twinkle in "twinkle, twinkle little star", then it's something linked to the wheel speed.
Yes, wheel bearings 95%. Been there done that. Typically they may be quiet for the first five minutes when the car is cold, quickly getting louder up to perhaps 50 mph. Faster than that road noise usually drowns them out. Any mechanic who has been around the block a few times will recognize the noise. If you remove the calipers with the wheel jacked up you can hear them, especially if you compare one side to the other. Don't buy cheap wheel bearing hub assemblies, they usually fail in a year. Timkens or OEM. These part numbers are for a 2012 Prius v with 16" wheels. Yours will be different.
