Planning on extensive Maintenance for used prius

    good. it's very easy to go overboard on your first car. i certainly did on mine and bought slick50 and some other snake oils. that was in the pre-internet era to my defense.

    the reality is, if one does just the minimum what the car maker is saying (ie regular oil changes, checking oil levels), one is already pampering the car and ahead of 90% of the lazy motoring population (including my family LOL).

    Well, I shoot my mouth off, NutzAboutBolts comes through with facts. Anyway, I would still think you're chasing diminishing returns, changing to 5.1, and it's really early too.

    Again -- this is a Prius. If we were talking about a Porsche racing around the mountains in 120 degree weather -- I would say go for it.

    The Prius is never going to stress the DOT3 ... or anything else.

    I agree with this... People who buy Prius are trying to save money in the long run, not spending a lot of money on unnecessary parts unless they want to dress it up with performance parts to make it look appealing :)

    I would like to add that Premium gas in a Prius will reduce mileage, because a higher octane will resist combustion, resulting in some non-combustion in a Prius. I tried this myself.

    That's very interesting, since I'm still on my premium tank and haven't run out yet (filled it up on the 21th, average about 63 MPG). Still got more then half a tank, but I did use to average about 65 so maybe that's why. Since I normally only put premium every tenth fill up that shouldn't kill me too much, just after the additives in Shell's premium to supplement my own.

    Speaking of parts I would actually love to make it look much more appealing, like this:

    But anyway yeah, I totally understand what everybody is saying, since I already have the OEM Toyota 5.1 brake fluid I'll use it and then just go back to Dot 3 when that time comes to change it again.

    I'm planning on using 5.1 brake fluid in my Prius after a flush - following Nutz about Bolts video. How much fluid will I need for a full flush? Will a flush completely replace all the original fluid i.e. the fluid in the brake accumulator?

    That “may” be ok, but I’d play it safe. I’ve done a couple of changes, used 2 pint bottles (aka one quart) of Toyota DOT 3, about $8 a bottle. There’s a link in my signature with some info.
