If air bags were deployed (car runs with no issues), I have read that resetting the air bags module will be enough for the air bags to be operational again? where is the air going to the bags coming from ? Is there an air tank that needs to be refilled? Or a mechanism that needs to be replaced? thank you, Roman
That’s not correct. Airbags and seat belt pre-tensioners are single-use parts; once deployed, they’re discarded and replaced. Depending on the type and severity of the collision, however, some of them may not have been deployed, and the un-deployed parts wouldn’t usually need to be replaced. The Repair Manual (more info) warns that the airbag ECU (computer) assembly and any airbag sensors in areas of the body that were damaged must also be replaced after an airbag deployment. Third parties offer the service of reconditioning airbag ECUs by clearing the memory, but that might not be a good idea: an airbag ECU has to supply a relatively high electric current to fire airbag squibs, and it may have been designed and tested to do that job reliably only one time. If you’re considering doing any of these repairs yourself, I strongly encourage you to read, understand, and follow the warnings in the Repair Manual about how to avoid personal injury and property damage when working on the supplemental restraint system (SRS) and handling airbags and other SRS parts.
