I agree with Darell. I used a different style of EV switch installation. I didn't touch the car's wiring and just ran a wire to ground and to position 27 on the ECU as instructed by Evan (and others) here on PC. I couldn't have done it without that help. It cost me less than $5.00 since I had wire on hand and all I needed was a momentary switch from Radio Shack. The switch is handy, I can see it, it is out of the way, and I can remove it and reinstall it in less than a minute if the I am in the mood to do so. This installation gives me instant acess to the EV mode (no 2 second delay). Here is what it looks like:

Edit: My camera flash puts much more light on it than usual. It is usually not this obvious.

Although I have the Coastal modification and appreciate the "lingo" in our posts, you guys realize it sounds like a Robin Willims routine. Remember Good Morning VietNam? I have had my 06 for approx 3 months and have been doing very well with MPG..(~52.5 after 4 gas tanks)..I have considered EV mode, but only if it would help me with gas mileage as the main reason. The main time I would use it is at the end of my drive home and to work for the last 1/4 mile. Is it even worth the bother. I live in Florida..No hills...Thanks

The picture in post #21 above is my car and I used a Radio Shack #275 609 "Pushbutton Switch". Actually the procedure is just the same as the instructions found here in PC right up to installing the switch. The good thing about it is that no wiring of the car is disturbed.

I ran a wire from position 27 on the ECU to the switch and from ground to the switch. It is not quite as simple as that but almost.

For the ground, I used the nut which is exposed behind the right air vent which is removed for access to the ECU. I made sure to tighten the nut back down firmly and tested the ground wire to be sure it held tight before I closed up the dash.

I then ran both wires behind the glove box along the wire bundle there (held in place with zip ties) and the down along the front of the podium (I pried it up and put the wires under it) and the brought the wires out where the podium meets the bottom of the dash on the driver's side. There , I cut the wires and installed quick releases for the switch so the switch could be easily and quickly removed and replaced if I wanted to do that.

For the switch, I took an old plastic prescription medicine container and cut off the bottom one inch. I bored a 1/2 inch hole centered in the bottom for the switch which I inserted after soldering wires to each terminal. I then attached a thin piece of plywood to the base of the switch setup with super glue and covered that with some stickyback velcro (the opposite of the variety which was on the bottom of the dash). I crimped the other ends of the quick release onto the switch wires after measureing them to fit. It doesn't matter which wire they are attached to since completing the ground is all that is required. I wrapped the remains of the medicine container with black electric tape because I thought it would look better.

You can see the result in the picture above.

Note: Removing this switch should be done with a putty knife inserted between the two pieces of velcro as twisting the old medicine container will break it off.

Second note: Inserting the connecter into position 27 is a pain as has been pointed out several times here before. I first inserted the twisted wire into the connecter and then compressed it slightly with a pair of pliers. Then I heated it from the bottom with a soldering iron until solder held from above melted. Finally, I took a file and gently removed any rough places from the connecter. It slid in smoothly all the way the first time and the connection was good right from the start and still is.

aaf709...I am trying to go to the link for the pictures and directions, but am having aproblem.. Any other way to get to the pitctures for this headlight mod? I've decided to do either the cc or flasher mod rather than the button bec it looks a bit less complex. Am I correct in that thought. Hopefully I can get detailed info on these two mods as compared to the button mod...thanks.

 

Sorry about the link, must've happened after the last crash.

Of the four methods, it looks like the CC* method is the least complex as you're only removing a couple of panels. The Flasher and the OEM require running a wire from the left to the right (and then you have to remove the same panels as the CC method. The DIY pushbutton shouldn't be that much harder as you decide where the button goes.

I have been looking around the forum a bit today to look at EV mode options.. so here is my question.

How does the CC cancel button work? Does it just connect to ground? or is it something fancier?

That is.. could i just move the wire (the purple one near the middle of the plug i believe, but the one other than the ground wire that needs to be tapped to install the Coastal Tech mod) to hole 27?

Would that just change my CC cancel button to be an EV switch?

I am ok with losing the CC cancel button.. i don't use it that often.

I'm just not certain if the switch uses the same technique (just grounding), or if it would not be that easy?

This would be the easiest way to get EV mode, i would think..

Alright. I watched a video of the Coastal EV switch install.. and all the wiring is right there in the same plug. I just don't know how the cancel button works.

I don't like the flasher idea. I'll just buy a momentary switch and wire it up myself.

Just did my EV mod with a momentary switch... the drivers vent was a bit hard to pull off, but it wasn't half as difficult as I figured. The mod is very cool for showing off the silent car.

Yeah, this is an old post, but I wanted to answer it.

As stated before, the EV mode is activated by a short from pin #27 to ground (when conditions are right). All methods work like that. The way Coastal's works (using the CC cancel) is when the lever is pulled it starts a two-second timer. Then it does the short to ground. This way the CC cancel is still active for normal use, you don't lose it. If you have the CC on and you want to cancel, just pull the lever. Normally that'll be less than 2 seconds. The plus is that it's pretty easy to install and you don't lose any function of the lever. The minus is that you have to wait 2 seconds for it to activate.
