I'd like to use the big screen on my new (to me) 2017 Prius Prime for google maps/android auto. I've seen a few threads here that mention apple carplay stuff but I'm an android user. Is there a solution that works?
Not for the 2017-2019 model years. Apple carplay was added in 2020 model year for the 11" screen which you would need to utilize one of those AI android box kits that you can find online. It needs at least Carplay to do it's thing.
You need a wireless dongle that take advantage or "hack" the wired apple carplay interface , to name a few; Carlinkit, Ottocast & MMB have units that have a wireless android interface that port through your vehicles wired apple carplay. The headunit will display apple carplay but you see Android auto on the screen. There are currently 3 types of dongles, 1. wired to wireless Apple Carplay 2. wired to wireless Apple Carplay/Android Auto (combo) 3. wired to wireless Carplay/Android Auto with Android box, this model lets you play Youtube, Netflix , streaming media and all the other apps that Apple Carplay and Android auto will not include.
Do your homework on the dongles first. All of them have bugs and connection problems. All the dongles use both Bluetooth and Wifi connection to communicate with your phone or tablet. Also, wireless carplay and android auto drains the phone's battery a lot faster. Wireless Android Auto on a wired Apple Carplay interface
I think you have these options: 1. Directly replace the head unit, there are many aftermarket Android head units in the market. After replacing, you can not only have carplay and AA, but also enjoy more other interesting features, but this product is very expensive, around $300-$500. More importantly, the original car needs to be modified, and the installation process is much more complicated. 2. Buy an extra touchscreen player that doesn't make any changes to the original car. It supports both wireless carplay and Android Auto. The price is around $239. So that is my choce. Hope my answer helps you.
I know about head units, but that installation process seems complicated. About the option 2 : Buy an extra touchscreen player... is it complicated to install? Do you have a link to share with me? thanks
I bought it from here, hope it can help you, just for reference. https://carlinkitbox.com/products/wireless-carplay-android-auto-tablet-portable-multimedia-player-car-radio-mp5-netflix-account-airplay-fm-for-cars-rs-motocycle
Its an android 7.5” screen has wireless carplay built in and will be complete plug and play. Installation is simple.
Thanks for that. I'm interested, but I wish someone would make something that would fit over the useless 11.6 screen (since I don't use the built-in navigation) and take advantage of that real estate. I don't think it's good to suction cup this thing on that screen.
