Thanks I’ll try that. It’s been getting progressively worse. Going in a straight line on a SMOOTH road it’s fine/ but hit some bumps or small potholes and it’s making the noises, coming from both front driver & passenger areas, almost sometimes like it’s in the middle. Very strange

It could be a broken engine mount, too.

Would that be part of the power train warranty? And if not, is it a bitch to replace?

Engine mounts are not difficult to replace, albeit supporting the engine will probably be needed, but they are probably not covered under powertrain.

I’ve done mounts and complete engine swaps in other vehicles- Nissans mostly. Just never a Toyota especially a PHEV.

ALSO: Something I noticed. When I had a single passenger who sat behind me (behind the drivers seat in the rear) I heard the sound LESS.

When I had a passenger in the right rear - it made the sound more. I haven’t experimented yet with someone sitting in the front passenger seat tho.

Does that help diagnose a little bit what it could be? That the noise is less likely when someone sits behind me?

More weight is being put on the broken/loose part so it moves less is my guess.

Okay. I wasn’t sure which way it would be.
I just couldn’t believe they wanted $144.95 just to look at the issue. The gamble being is if it’s not power train related I have to pay for it. Yet Midas or Meineke will look at the car for free. I asked why Toyota can’t do that since it’s on the lift anyway for an oil change. The Toyota rep goes “well the techs have to get paid somehow” - I replied with “well then how does Midas do it? They do it for free and then tell you what’s wrong” she goes “I don’t know- I don’t work for Midas.”

Silliness. Never take your car for repairs to the dealer unless it’s under warranty or no one else can figure out what’s wrong with it.

    My plan:
    1) Go to Midas or Meineke and tell them I’ve been hearing a clunking sound up front.

    2) If it’s something cheap and minor I’ll pay them to fix it.

    3) If it’s not cheap I’ll fix it myself as I’ve done plenty of mechanical work on my cars. Motor swaps. Clutches. Suspension. I can do it.

 If the dealer had been doing the state inspection, they'd have found it before you mentioned it, and writing up the quote.

That’s true. But it wasn’t making that sound then. Although I wish it was bc that was before I hit 36k miles or right around there. Have been all over the northeast part of the country the last few months, most driving I’ve done in years. Like upstate NY then delaware the next night then NJ then Pa the next two etc.

Two things to keep in mind:
--The service department is probably the highest profit section of the dealership.
--The techs, Midas and everywhere else, get paid by the job. If they don't find a job to sell you, they don't make any money. They'll find something.
